Silkie thread!

Quote:
A lot of breeders aim for a very small comb on silkies. The standard says: "COMB: Walnut--set firmly and evenly on head, almost circular in shape, preferably broader than longer, with a number of small prominences over it, a slight indentation of furrow, transversely across the middle, rising to a point just forward of the nostrils and extending backwards to a point parallel with front of eyes." The only difference for a female is that it adds "very small, well formed" between the "--" and "set firmly and evenly..." and that the word "or" is used instead of "of in describing the transverse indentation. Note that no size is attached to a male silkie's comb in the standard.

Thank you all so much for your sex id info on my flock!! Why is it that I can do so well on everybody ELSE'S chickies but cannot make up my mind on my own??
I tried to get some better pix of the ones that were questionable. As far as ages go, the buff (Navidad) is 4 months (guess when he hatched out?

) the cuckoos, blue and white ones are all 3 months. Thank you!

Navidad

Navidad

I'm not sure on the cuckoos, but Navidad looks like a boy. Cuckoo (barring) gene lightens skin colouring, so red does not necessarily mean "boy,"

Hey Silkie fans,

Just wanted to share some pictures of my mothers silkies. I love seeing everyone's pictures and decided to share some adults too! (Picture heavy... Sorry! I'm on dial up so you can imagine the horror of uploads and downloads

For those wanting to know what streamers are, look at the boy on the right--quintessential streamers!

Thanks again for the feed back.. Scared I was thinking peaches was a boy too... She/he just looks really rooster -ish close up.... I think it's her/ his neck feathers.. Sigh... But I think I may wait till replace.. I hate to return peaches and she then end up being a real she

she acts really hen-ish. But maybe she/he is soo attached to nugget that it does whatever she does lol is that possible?
As far as biscuit I got one not sure one pullet she only worrys me becaue she fights with struedel... Would a girl chick fight with a roo? Is that normal? Why are yall thinking struedel is a boy? Is it cause the crest s swooped back....
Again thanks a bunch for all ya'lls input.

Strueded has a large comb for his/her age. Yes, girls fight like boys.

My beautiful girl Ginger

Licorice - 6 month old black pullet

one of my grow out kids - this one is about 10/11 weeks old

Some of mine all out free ranging - They are just lounging about

I love that first baby!!! The girl in my avatar looked a lot like that. Ginger is stunning! I so wish I had an easy way to let mine out on the grass. Some day!!

Wow, SOS! Those are some beautiful birds! I love watching them sun, usually while I'm busy cleaning stalls or their coop...kinda makes me jealous...

Oh! And thank you about the info on the comb color for the cuckoos. I guess I will have to wait on those 2 to see if anyone crows...no problem! And Navidad is my chickie that was hatched with a neurological problem - his head does a kind of "roll" back and forth every few minutes. I didn't think he was going to make it as a newbie, so I babied the tar out of him (figuring that if he didn't have long to live I was going to give him the best possible life for the time he had). He is now healthy as can be and has adjusted perfectly to life in the flock. He has even come to my office with me where one of my associates COULD NOT believe that he is a chicken! Made me show him on the internet!

Navidad will probably live happily in my bachelor pen since I'm not sure where his neurological issue comes from and wouldn't want to take a chance on another one being hatched with it.

Thank you for tolerating my ramblings! You guys are the BEST!!
