Silkie thread!

That is the weirdest thing...it happens in the new breed the tetra white too, the dingy white. I would have thought a cruddy splash when she was younger but she's still kinda white..

Ok, so I have been trying to figure out what color that Einstein is and we have all been guessing! Well, I emailed the breeder and asked her. And she knows exactly. So everyone that said my little Einstein was a splash is totally correct. I looked at all her chickens that day, but came home overwhelmed and didn't know what I had exactly! So here is Einsteins parents. THe breeder was happy to upload some pics to Facebook for me! The rooster won "RV" at the last show (Im guessing that is Reserve, I only know horse shows).

= Einstein

She posted a pic of one of her other chicks from another hatch and they look very similar. The dingy white color ;)

The symptoms you describe fit Mereks Disease. The limping, then the bird lays down, looking like its stretching its legs out to the side trying to get up. Eventually the bird dies because it cannot move to eat or drink. If it is Mereks, then you will probably have more birds fit the symptoms. Sometimes birds just go down like that and it isn't Mereks and no other birds present with symptoms.
I would isolate him from your other birds. If you hand feed him, it will prolong his life, but is it worth it? And if it is Mereks, you might be subjecting the rest of your flock to it.
Usually birds that get this are around 3 to 4 months old. Its not pleasant. And of course, it always is one of your best or favorite chickens.
I was thinking about that as well. I did have two sister birds go down about 8 months ago and culled them. I got them at 8 weeks old and they were housed together. I'm just confused because we haven't added any other birds to our flock and his coopmate hasn't shown any symptoms in that time.

I think I will separate him though, as Violet's chicks are hatching any day now. I can't raise the chicks separately though since I don't have anywhere else to put them.

Is there any other way for me to confirm that that's what it is besides a necropsy?

Unfortunately, not. But if you've had other birds go down in a similar fashion, you really should try to get a necropsy done because Mareks could very well be "hanging" around your place now. You will want to do a VERY thorough cleaning. Some birds will build natural immunity but many will succumb. And those that live through it often carry Mareks. Not fun. I'm truly sorry that you are going through this.

You might also need to consider vaccination of all your chicks in future.

oh wow-- you probably should have mentioned before now that you had two other birds that had Mareks. I wasn't thinking of that because I was assuming you had never had illness on your property. But Barngoddess is correct, once you have it-- it is very difficult to get rid of. I don't have personal experience with it though. But I've read a lot on it. So sorry, but I'd have the necropsy done without hesitation.

my o my its been some time since I've posted... but I've been ready... and looking at all the pretty silkie pictures...
so my nugget who started to lay and who i found eggs had be fertilized by my peach (who i didn't even know was a roo) well i put her 1st batch of eggs in the incubator... nothing developed... i'm thinking since i had them in a very very cold fridge that messed things up... she continued to lay and i check to see if they were still fertile and they still did so now i have 4 in the incubator, wondering if anything will come of them ... wonder if its cause she just started to lay ( just a month now) hmm... either way since i had the incubator already i thought id try. she laid  and egg yesterday and well then decided to go broody she's been in her house for the 2 days now (sitting on 2 eggs - had one that i didn't put in the incubator so i slipped it under her).... only came out in the morning to eat and drink... :/  should i put food and water in her house so she doesn't have to come out ? (not sure if those eggs are fertile figured I'd candle them in a several days ....even thought about buying eggs just been trying to figure out a place in driving distance cause i only want a hand few and worry bout shipping ...hmm...)
the pastries are turning 3 months! no crowing but i really think that strudel is a roo....his comb had gotten a deeper red (mulberry) and i can see wattles  too
what do you guys think, still look rooish?

i think i maybe be in denial.. but subconsciously know that strudel is indeed a roo... i keep calling him a he.... your thoughts?
i also fear that biscuit is a roo too... her comb isn't as red as strudel's but i don't know and on a rare occasion she'll chest bump strudel ( they used to play fight alot when they were younger, but have sort have stopped as they got older)

call it paranoia lol but i think i see streamers coming in ....am i seeing things???

hope everyone is having a great day. i hope for those who have babies who are sick that they get better... and for those who are hatching or waiting to hatch have happy successful ones! :)

Are these two separate birds?  Hopefully I'm wrong-- but they both look like cockerels to me.  The bottom one definitely looks like streamers coming in and has kind of a large comb for it's age.  The top one has the "brushed back" crest look that boys have.

Lol nope 2 different birds....then im not seeing things...:: Whomp....whomp....:: was hoping i was just being paranoid.... My other 2 have no comb at allmad crest are super full in comparison.

:/ guess gonna need to exchange ...just dont know if i should wait a little more... Hmmm...

Okay. Roosters are hilarious!

I took and moved my two hens with their chicks back outside today. The girls had been indoors sitting on their eggs. Now that the chicks have hatched and they are big enough, back out they went! lol So, I walk in through the pen door with one hen and a chick in my hand, I go and put them in the coop and walk out. My rooster goes barreling in the coop and starts his little dance for the hen! I just about died laughing. It was HILARIOUS! It was just the way he did it. lol It was like he was saying, as he was running, "Oh my god, oh my god, she's here, she's here, she's here!!" Then I go and get the other hen and rest of the chicks, put them in the coop and Sir Curly does the same thing. They are just sooo funny. Two hours later, he's still out there playing Macho Man for his "women".

That'll keep him busy for the rest of the night. And probably several days to come. lol

A Splash question.
At what age can you begin to tell that you have a Splash? When do they start showing their "dots"? Our chicks are all grey colored now and apparently they are most likely blue or splash. I'm just dying to figure out who's what.
big_smile.png
We also have a chick that's grey with some yellowish feathers on him. I have no idea how she'll (hoping) turn out. Can't seem to find a good clear picture of the chick to share..

And then there's this little one. I think I asked this question before but what color might this chick be? It's got the chipmunk stripes and all but it's not your typical partridge color? It also has a grey ring around it's neck, mostly "back of the head" so to say. And the wings are coming out this color. Originally it was yellow with the black chipmunk pattern, now it's turning white.

And then there are the cute pictures to share.
