Silkie thread!

Hi there!

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I just had a question that I thought maybe some of you Silky people could answer for me.

I'm considering adding Silkies to my small flock sometime in the future. I just wondered, does anyone have experience with keeping Silkies and Brahmas in the same coop?

I probably won't be adding them very soon, but I just wanted to some your opinions on the subject

Thank you so much!!

PS: Please tell me if this is posted in the wrong place. Thanks!
I have a small flock of brahmas and I raise silkies...Are you talking about bantam brahmas or large fowl? if large fowl then I would not house them together, my brahmas will pick on younger silkies, adult mature silkie hens can assert themselves and try to whoop the brahmas but as youngsters and as a new comer in a flock I would not suggest it. If it were the other way around (silkies first then brahmas or if they were all raised together) I wouldn't see a problem at all.

I do not currently house my silkies with my flock. They are about 9 weeks old now. I do however allow everyone to free range together. They are all very cliquey. The large fowl and my other two bantams act like the silkies are invisible.

I don't believe hatchery silkies have the vaulted skulls and many breed/show quality silkie do not have it either. Because of the large crest silkies can't see a peck coming. Hatchery silkies don't usually have such a large crest either. In case you are familiar with the vaulted skull here is a photo of my recent hatch. The vault actually exposes the brain like the soft spot on a human baby. One chick is vaulted and the other is not.

Here's a better view on some other chicks. The one in the middle is not vaulted. :)

I guess it all depends too on the breed you want the Silkies to be in with. I have Black and Blue Copper Marans, and let me tel you, the hens are EVIL HAGS to any outsiders! They are much more likely to do damage to a Silkie than my roos. I have a Blue Partridge hen that got pecked on the head HARD by an overly amourous roo. She was right around 5 months old when it happened, and I saw it happen. The next day, she looked like the Exorsist, she had brain swelling, and went wry necked. I started her on vitamins hoping against hope it might help, but no. Then the weather had a cold snap, and that seemed to bring down the swelling. She is still with me today, but everytime she gets stressed, she turns her head upsidedown, and sometimes falls over on her side. These spells only last a few seconds, then she gets up and goes about her business. She has a very vaulted skull too. She's a year old now, and broody at the moment.

Thank you so much for all the information! I wil make note of all this and keep it in mind for future flock additions. (yes, I am a victim of mild chicken math)

Since I only have two Brahmas, I wonder if they would pose less of an injury risk to the Silkies.

Anyway, thank you all so much! This has been very helpful!

Hi! Thanks for the replies!

They are LF Brahmas, and I have two of them. They are 10 weeks and both pullets. (hopefully :D) It makes sense to separate them until full grown. I'm curious, at what age would you put them together with LF Brahmas?

Thanks again!
