Silkie thread!

My sweet Tara has been relegated to the baby pen. All the others were picking on her and she just stood there and let them. She is very patient and kind with the babies.




And here is my "mystery" chick. Now just over 2 months old. He used to look like a cuckoo, but now I am thinking partridge? Any guesses?

Tara is sooo beautiful!! Mystery chick looks cuckoo and partridge mixed. Very unique!

Look at all those fuzzy butts! So cute. Maybe once they've had it a couple times they'll realize how good it is.

I would hope so. Otherwise I will have to tell my chickens that they are not acting normal!

Well.... The watermelon wasn't a very big hit. Actually, it wasn't a hit at all! lol The chickens refused to eat it out of a dish. They just circled the dish and would not go near it.

So I dumped the pieces on the ground, some of them kinda pecked at it and that was about it. My rooster Curly did like the watermelon! The rest of the flock were much more interested in the frozen veggies. You may notice in the pictures that my chickens will not eat anything off a plate or any other kind of dish. lol I should probably just leave a plate out there for them one of these days.. Maybe they'll get used to it.

My silkies are terrified of anything that's new. I had the same problem with watermelon in the beginning. Now you know where the phrase "you're just a big chicken!" came from.

It took my babies a while to figure it out, but now they ADORE watermelon!

I use blunt end baby scissors. The blades are only about 3/4 of an inch long. I only trim cheeks unless the crest is interfering with their straight ahead vision.

Thanks peep..I finally got brave. Oh my goodness..and bless her heart! When I put her down, she started to look around, wouldn't even go near her fav. treat I put in for them, she went from one end of the coop and back, stopped, looked up at me, stopped, looked up at the roost in the middle of the run, then finally went to have some treats, then went wondering around again. She could see! I should have done that a long time ago. I know now to keep her trim. What beautiful eyes! My husband was helping holding her, she was actually quite good the whole time, but he made a comment on how pretty her eyes were.....anyway..I have a silly question. or two..or....

here goes....what is that blue on the sides of their heads called? What are they? Ok, two questions. It doesn't mean boy does it, or do they all have that when they get older? Ok, let's count..4 questions? lol....thank you!

My DD had a couple of friends over yesterday and invited "her" 8 week old Silkie Lucille, to visit with the girls as well. Lucille was of course, a big hit. She seemed to take it all in stride which was pretty amusing to me.

I can't keep track of who has what colors but if your bird is white (like mine) the blue you are referring to is her ear lobes I believe and as far as I have gleened from the thread, it doesn't mean boy or girl, just part of the coloring on the white ones. This is our first silkie so if I have gotten this wrong, someone please correct me. I don't know if it stays with them but it is one of my favorite parts of my bird.

Basel, JoshU, Hawkeye, thanks for your replies about my polish. I found a few labs and just might do the DNA sex testing. However, if I test this one...I'm going to want to test all 7 silkie babies, cuz I'm dying to know what they are!

This wc blue polish started crowing at 5 1/2 weeks and that the age in the video. It is now 7weeks old. His/her mother is a Sylvia Babus hen and is just gorgeous. Here are a few pics taken in the last day or so.

Here is the hatchmate who is not crowing...a wc black (same dad and possibly same mom):
