Silkie thread!

We sold our little blue silkie hen tonight, sad to see her go, but my daughter did well and was happy with her $$. It was her first sale, No tears.

I now have a question about buffs, can a buff hen be bred to any other color roo or just a buff roo?

Thanks peep..I finally got brave. Oh my goodness..and bless her heart! When I put her down, she started to look around, wouldn't even go near her fav. treat I put in for them, she went from one end of the coop and back, stopped, looked up at me, stopped, looked up at the roost in the middle of the run, then finally went to have some treats, then went wondering around again. She could see! I should have done that a long time ago. I know now to keep her trim. What beautiful eyes! My husband was helping holding her, she was actually quite good the whole time, but he made a comment on how pretty her eyes were.....anyway..I have a silly question. or two..or....

here goes....what is that blue on the sides of their heads called? What are they? Ok, two questions. It doesn't mean boy does it, or do they all have that when they get older? Ok, let's count..4 questions? lol....thank you!
I got the same reaction from my blue hen when I trimmed her feathers. If she could talk, she would have been yelling "I can see, I can see!!!"

Mine are the same way! Yesterday they were given grapes and it took the longest time for them to go near the plate. Once they figured out that the grapes weren't going to jump up and bite them, two of the 7 week olds started to play keep away. One would run around with a grape in its mouth until the other grabbed it away and ran in the opposite direction! They did for a few minutes and it was so cute. Tina G
Don't you love watching them run around with food with the rest of the flock chasing them just for that one piece, even though there is plenty for everyone?

And just for fun here is my Columbian Silkie, he is 3 months old. Anyone else working with this color???

I have a rooster that almost fits the Columbian color, I believe. Someone recommended breeding him to a Columbian hen to see what I'd get. Now I just need the hen! lol Got one?

This is what my rooster looks like.

Here's one of his chicks from this year. The sunlight totally whitened this one's head, there's some black/grey growing out there too. I'm keeping all my toes and fingers crossed for a hen!

Oh please post some photos! Cinnamuffin is an adorable name!! :)
OK, finally got some new photos of Cinnamuffin, which used to be called "Fluffy" until the brown/rust kept coming in!

This is our surprise partridge chick from BBS eggs at 13 weeks old. The eggs were from Sherie Minkner's Silkies in Lincoln, CA.

Can anyone tell if it is for sure a pullet or could it be a cockerel? Also (by appearance) does Cinnamuffin meet the SOP for partridge? I may sell her

to the right home since my plan was to only have BBS silkies. But I don't know, she is a sweetie.

At first I couldn't get the brown to show up and then I took some without the flash. These photos are all of Cinnamuffin. She looks a bit scruffy from sticky watermelon.

The light really washes out the coloring...photos all taken today.

And, a baby picture.

Cinnamuffin is in the front, right side. We never expected a partridge chick

but we sure do like Cinnamuffin:

Help! What's a good book for a Silkie enthusiast looking for more education on the breed, colors and breeding?
On the American Silkie Bantam Club they're selling the "The Silkie - Not Your Average Pet" http://www.americansilkiebantamclub.org/books.asp
What does this book have in it?

What about "The New 2010 Standard of Perfection" on the American Poultry Association website? How much Silkie information does this book have?
http://www.amerpoultryassn.com/APA_ShoppingMall3.htm

I'm looking for something simple...idiot proof. lol Something that will help me understand the DQs in a Silkie, things that are good to have (and not DQ). Color definitions etc.. Hope I make some sense?

For show standard colors, only buff. A popular project color is isabel/porcelain which is a cross to self-blue(lavender) then take the babies and breed them back to self-blue. Fun stuff!
