Silkie thread!

Hate to say this, but that looks very boy-ish. Crest doesn't necessarily, but something screams boy to me. Hope I am wrong. That bird has a super short back! Looks good but keep an eye
on it to make sure he doesn't have a crooked back or wry tail. Yes I'd be hoping girl too!

Yes, I hatch and sell year round but I live in a very silkie deprived area so that makes it easier. I get the most results from craigslist but also get a lot of inquiries from my website. Chicks are probably the easiest to sell. I hope to try shipping in late fall. I'm raising several quality juveniles that I hope will become SQ and I can't keep them all! :)  I am not yet NPIP but my son-in-law is a veterinarian so I'm hoping to be able to get any vaccinations done that are required by different states. I am recovering from back surgery but if all goes well, I hope to show this fall. Big adventures await!!

Your husband sounds wonderful. I'm so glad you can still be on BYC with us while you are recuperating. I feel that you and Hawkeye are our very own "silkie ambassadors" and help so many of us...and since up you are missing so much with your own flock, I'll try to post some pics of our chicks for you to enjoy.
Be well, Tina

Thanks! I thought I would be doing great by now, but after talking to some other people who have had it, I see I was overly optimistic. :)
Oh, I'm so sorry...what kind of back surgery?? I sure hope you feel better soon, too.

OH MY GOODNESS!! My third chick hatched with severely vaulted skull (at least it looks severe to me), and its neck looks a little funny, but you can't see it in a picture. I know it's hard to see, but maybe someone can see good enough-it looks higher in person....do I need to make a tiny helmet for this one?

Here's an update on my blue splash..peep knows her by now.

And I have a white one that I am crossing fingers to be a girl.

I got brave and trimmed her eye area..man she was glad to be able to see! lol..

Another angle. She is one of the sweetest birds I have. She doesn't mind me putting in
other babies in there as a grow out pen..hoping this will help when she and another Silkie or showgirl has babies at the same time, they will hopefully be used to other babies being in there. :)

My white girl...I hope it's a girl. A little Wellie

There she is in the back with all her buddies..girl buddies.

That's so sweet! And I second what you said about Peep! :)

She's just fine! Nearly all of my chicks hatch with vaulted skulls, and they are at least that big! I haven't had any hatch with really small vaults, it seems like the birds I'm working with are throwing big vaults. This is typical of some lines. Just keep in mind that there are two sides to the vault-- people will say that a vault can create "lobes" in your crest which is undesirable (sort of like a globe within a globe). That will be judged badly. And others claim that vaults give bigger crests. BUT-- I have a vaulted adult bird and you'd never know it! She has the smallest crest out of all of my birds. But I keep using her to breed with, because she keeps throwing birds with BIG crests. But she is case in point-- throws the theory out the window that a vault automatically equals a large crest. So just have to wait and see how this one grows out. And THIS (vaulted skulls) is why I keep my silkies separate from any other breed of bird.

X3 about Peep!

Seems like I have one with small vault, one with sm-med, and then this one is x-large....will the others hurt it? And, do their skulls form over it like a baby's does, or will it always have an exposed brain?
I this one may be named Coney....

It will always be exposed. There will only be skin covering it. And no, if the others are silkies-- they will be fine.

Quote: I have some B/S eggs, whites, one black, one buff, one partridge. Couple of paints, two lavenders, one porcelain. I'm wondering if I'm forgetting something...? lol I think that was all. I ordered eggs from Catdance and those were the wonderful colors I received.

I'm really, really, really, REALLY hoping for all of the lavender, porceilain and paints to hatch! And the one single buff.
How abou you?

I have a couple of dozen silkies. I'm hatching everything from two hens when they aren't broody. I have mostly juveniles. I also have 3 PQ broodies. I have BBS and working toward a pen of lavender and a pen of porcelain. I still only have the one partridge girl. :( I think I might have some fun and breed her to my beautiful porcelain cockerel. (He's not mature yet) If anyone thinks that's a terrible mistake, please let me know! I know I'm mixing a bunch of genes there.

Having the couple of dozen of them, when you say they cover for all the expenses, this includes show fees also? I don't remember if you show your birds?

I'll have to remember craigslist next time I need to sell any of my birds.

Thanks so much, Tina! I know Hawkeye feels the same way I do. We wish there were some seasoned experts on here regularly.
