I can't believe how much they've grown. I really need another hen. The lady I bought them from doesnt want to sell any more hens.

I love Rusty's color!!! That's an awesome looking blue girl!

Thanks Peep :) I'm hoping to get a hen from you, maybe a nice partridge to go with Rusty? I would really like a splash to they're so pretty.

I feel like this is more for this thread than the "serious" breeding and showing thread, since I am not serious into showing or breeding.

I was told there are gold and silver genes in white silkies, and other colors too I suppose. White Silkies with the gold gene will yellow more than White Silkies with the silver gene. What exactly does this mean and how do I know what genes mine have? I would like to hatch out chicks and try to figure out how to breed to get better stock, but for year old silkies they don't lay but maybe 3 eggs a week from 3 hens.

Silkies usually average 3 - 4 eggs a week. Sorry yours are so slow. If they are just starting to lay they may pick up some or it may be the hot weather. If you don't know the genetic history of your birds you will have to go by looks. Silver gene white silkies are very white. You might by some to mix with yours and keep the whitest ones to breed further and so forth
