Silkie thread!

Haven't been on for a while..how are you feeling peep?

Have a question...on toe nails! First I will post a picture of my girls, I haven't in a while, and I think my blue splash is close to laying. She has gotten kind of purtty if I say so myself. :))

I just trimmed around their eyes yesterday. That splash gets
so thick around her face. Very pretty, but she can't see, and
she shakes her head a lot..not a very professional job, but she
can see. :)

Check out those toe nails! I've had chickens with crooked
toes, but never nails!

They are way long too..I have a pretty good set of doggy clippers
would that do?

Wow! They are looking great!! The clippers will work. Trim a very small amount at a time. They bleed easy. I am doing pretty well but recovery is so slow! I'm very impatient!!

Thanks for asking!

Some of my silkie's 4th and 5th toes are quite fused like this buff, while some are more spaced like this blue. Is one more desirable than the other? Would this buff one have points taken off or not be as perfect as a similar bird with better toe spacing?

Toes should not be fused and yes you would likely lose 1 or 2 points.

I just got some silkies myself and love them. They are babies right now but one is partridge and one is blue or black. I don't have any good pictures of them yet. But i was told you can tell a silky when it has 5 toes, is this true?
Silkies are not the only breed with five toes. They should also have black skin and silkied feathers. A silkie cross can have 5 toes and black skin. Hope to see pictures of your new babies soon!

ETA: Keep in mind that cross beak or twists *usually* do NOT show up in chicks. It usually starts to appear around 6-8 weeks of age. So you can have a perfectly normal looking chick that will suddenly develop this condition. Good idea to check your breeding stock at that point and look for very subtle beak issues and cull them.

A crooked beak/twisted beak looks like this: (the upper and lower beak align up and do NOT cross) It is guessed to be genetic, but there are arguments that it could be positioning in the egg... but too risky to chance breeding. The entire skull is twisted in this type of beak issue.

A cross beak (or I've heard people call it scissor beak) looks like this: This IS genetic and will be passed on to offspring!

and can be as severe as this:

Thank you very much, excellent info w/photos. I just want to give each of those birds a hug...

Guess what I just found? Yup, a crooked beak. :-(

Thank you all for the comments. Sounds like my blue splash will be getting a nail trim tomorrow. A little worried, my first time trimming nails, I was nervous enough trimming around those eyes. Ok, so....

Quote: Noticed you are on a phone. How on earth did you manage to submit a pic??? Ive been trying to figure it out since I got my Droid in May. I can submit replies but pics... no such luck. Thanks in advance :)
The Tapatalk app is the key...it's the only tool I have found so far that works for viewing forums and uploading pics. I'm using an iPhone, but there may be a version for the Droid. I love it...makes reading BYC on the phone so much easier. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
