If you have roosters, don't ever change them over. Just add an extra feeder with oyster shell.
yes, I have roosters. I just thought they needed to be put on layers or something once they got older. First time with chickens so I thought I better ask.

If you went to the feed store, they may suggest you do. There is a lot of research showing how layer will damage the kidneys of roosters, as well as any pullets or hens that are not laying. That's what the oyster shell is for - to make laying hens' eggs stronger. They take what they need, instead of having to work their kidneys hard to get rid of what they don't need. I hope that makes sense?

It does make sense, thanks for the information cause I was going to buy layers feed this weekend. I will just be getting more grower and oyster shells for them. Hope they start laying soon.

When I bought a couple of splash last week- I asked the guy what food they were used to. He said 22% protein pellet and some 5 way (?) scratch. I got them what they were used to. I started feeding my others the same. The pellet stuff said "stronger eggshells" (it's dark now, can't see the bag). Anyway- out of 13 chickens, only 6 are girls - is it ok that the males are eating it? They are not separated yet- haven't started breeding, and they bigger silkie pile- the warmer :)/ Hope the boys can eat it. Oh- 1 of the boys is a large sized Phoenix (4 months old) The rest are Silkies and a Showgirl . Anyway- the only point to all this rambling that I'm doing- is if the cockerels can eat the layer pellets with the scratch. Thanks! Pam

Once that bag is finished, get grower. Short term it won't hurt them, long term it will.

You want grower or flock raiser or game bird feed. Just stay away from layer :) Also you can get grower in pellets in some places. I can only get pellets if I buy Purina - and I'd much rather stick local. I wish I could get pellets in the local feed. It is so much less waste!
