Silkie thread!

I live nnear death valley and our summer temperatures are mostly 100 F to 115 F. The Silkies pant a lot just like the other chickens. I keep shallow pans of water in their runs. They learn that wetting their feet cools them. Also the like it when the sand is wet so the dirt baths cool them also. Shade spots is a must also.

Yeah she's still feathering out

Should be nice and full when she's older. In just the month i've had her she has gotten twice as fluffy!
I want one with feet like that!

Know silkies seem to cope fine in cold but how are they in heat?
Have a heatwave on the way next week with Tuesday forecast to be 40 (104F)
I spray the dirt with cold water, if they want to take a dust bath I'm hoping it cools them down. Just makes a mess with wet dirt, but hey. If it keeps them cool! lol
I also feed them cold treats like frozen vegetables and watermelon. They LOOOVE those!

Shade is of course important.
I read here on the forum, might have been this summer, people had little misters in their pens for their silkies. Apparently you can find them at a hardware store. I don't have one of those but it sounds like a pretty neat idea. If I had a setup that worked, I'd try it. I did try to mist them with a hose but the chickens didn't think it was such a great idea.

Good luck! Wish it was that warm here in Connecticut. We are FREEZING!!

Thank you.....I've got 7 of her eggs (my FIRST HATCH EVER TOOOO) I put them in my homemade incubator this morning.....:)
Now the thing is, it is not recommended to breed white to anything other than white unless you know his background. Because you may end up with a lot of oddly colored chicks. Also, white is recessive so unless your hen has a hidden white gene you won't get any whites.

I haven't posted any pictures in a while. Here is my little paint girl (

) at 3 months and one week old. Her poofy little crest is as wide as her body. I just love her so much!!!!

I knew that her eggs were going to be "up for grabs" so to speak. I got these 2 for $10 off of craigslist, the lady I got them from, her sister breeds them, and they were a gift to her. I have now been in touch with Claudia, who breeds them in Missouri, an she has been giving me some pointers. My problem is this...I have 6 roos
