Silkie thread!

Anyone else's flock going through moult? I have one winter-born and one spring-born who are going through their first. Beards dropped out almost overnight. Then I have another who really NEEDS one...

ok, what is smut?

Smut ... an ugly word for such beautiful creatures....
It is the off color in a Silkie...

Buff Silkies that are "clear" are a solid Buff color... If a Buff silkie has blue or black in the tail or wings, they call it smut...

ahhhh, thank you! Can any color be smutty, or just buff? Like a black with a few brownish feathers, would he have smut then?
I know...lots of questions. sorry!

I suppose so, but it's normaly just used for Buff... I've heard them speak of it with Lavenders that have too many dark feathers as well... but that depens if it has Splash in it or not. Some that definitely do not have Splash have smut.
Buffs that have smut can still get BV at a show. My first show I attended in New York years ago had Buffs with smut in the hackle even. They've come a long way since then.
And Buffs have a HUGE cute factor.

Thank you!
I'm really wishing I had ordered buff instead of white. I've got 5 splash and 5 white coming from cackle in 31 days, and ordered white cuz my hubby like them the best. I figured I should try to at least get something that he liked since he going with the flow so smoothly! lol
Oh well, I know they won't be show quality anyway. Going to have to start working towards those!

The same here. I actually live closer to the Syracuse PO hub. If I use the PO for my zipcode, it adds a day of shipping. I mailed out silkie eggs at 5:00 monday and she had them in western NY the next morning! Not too shabby!

Priority normally takes 2 days unless it has to go through Memphis. I sent a rooster to Washington state via Express... she had him the next day. I got chicks from Alabama -also Express- it took 3 days! Didn't work out too well for a third of the chicks & they had no record of amy scans past Memphis, so there was no way to track them. I was told that once the "package" is in Fedex's hands, they use a different barcode system which makes it impossible to track.

I had that happen too. When he didn't arrive when he was suppose to I got on the phone and called very post office starting at the one he began at. I asked them which PO he would have gone to next and so on. I called every one. They all couldn't explain to me why he wasn't scanned. Finally a few days later a PO I called that he must have been at finally scanned him. He was due to arrive at a post office that was over an hour drive in the other direction. He was at Memphis which is little over 2 hours south of me. Instead of going to my post office here he was sent over an hour away. Thank goodness I called every post office in West Tennessee and asked them to call me if he arrived. I got a call at 1 am he was there and I told them to not send him in another truck that i'll come get him. He was in the mail for a week. He never got over it either. He was freaked out for a long time and then turned mean. He's been the only silkie roo i've had that would attack. I had to give him away after having to pay the high price of shipping.

I hope your roo isn't traumatized over his ordeal. There have been alot of birds I wanted but I'm afraid to have them shipped. I just remember the huge loss and the trauma he went thru and I always back out. I'd rather be able to pick the bird up.

Super cute! But there is no way to tell at this age what sex they will be. I have even had 5 months old trick me I think they are hens and the next thing I know they are Crowing.

I've only had silkies a year and it's hard to tell if they are girls or boys for me still. I had one that I asked fellow byc'ers and most of them said boy. She laid eggs soon after. She's a loyal broody too. I recently added a few of my juveniles to my b/b/s pen. One that I could have sworn was a girl the roo attacked and the other 2 he tried to breed. Some of mine are clearly boys because the longer feathers on their crest. The name of them escapes my memory right now. But some it's hard to tell. I tried the bump on the leg method and was all wrong. So I just wait. I have 4 that I plan to get some good pics of and put on here and ask what color they are. I'm guessing red partridge. Three of them have dark crests and 1 has was looks to me to be either buff or red. I wish there was a color chart of colors for silkies somewhere. Does anybody know of a link? I would love to get some into showing but I have alot to learn.
