Silkie thread!

Super cute! But there is no way to tell at this age what sex they will be. I have even had 5 months old trick me I think they are hens and the next thing I know they are Crowing.

I've only had silkies a year and it's hard to tell if they are girls or boys for me still. I had one that I asked fellow byc'ers and most of them said boy. She laid eggs soon after. She's a loyal broody too. I recently added a few of my juveniles to my b/b/s pen. One that I could have sworn was a girl the roo attacked and the other 2 he tried to breed. Some of mine are clearly boys because the longer feathers on their crest. The name of them escapes my memory right now. But some it's hard to tell. I tried the bump on the leg method and was all wrong. So I just wait. I have 4 that I plan to get some good pics of and put on here and ask what color they are. I'm guessing red partridge. Three of them have dark crests and 1 has was looks to me to be either buff or red. I wish there was a color chart of colors for silkies somewhere. Does anybody know of a link? I would love to get some into showing but I have alot to learn.

Inga Ladd used to have one before msn took down their group message boards. You could try googling "silkies in color" and see if you can find a current link. Also, if you are a member of the American Silkie Bantam Club, there is a chart in this year's Yearbook on pages 26 & 27.

So are you saying you don't know what sex silkies are unless they crow or lay eggs?
At about what age (how many months) is that a definent???

Some I can. Some are just hard to tell. But I'm still new with silkies. I decided to mainly concentrate on one breed. I have a Black Orphington roo i'm still trying to hatch out his some girls for and a pair of speckled sussex bantams and 4 guinea. I did a project last year with a splash silkie roo over a wheaten ee hen and they carried the silkie gene pretty strong but the lady I sold them to informed me the hens are laying blue and olive eggs. I may put a Orp hen in with a silkie to see how that works out one day but unless I can manage to hatch out some orp girls that won't happen anytime soon.

I'm not new and almost gave away a five month old male that turned out to be a stunning female once she finished filling out. Some of them are just really tough to decide male or female.

I am nowhere near an expert but I usually pride myself on knowing the sex of my birds (most of which have not been Silkies) at a young age. Silkies can be so amazingly difficult though.

Thought this bird was a roo from the gangly appearance and a disposition that struck me as being that of an adolescent male. Looked much more odd than the females of it's age. I was waiting for the crow for weeks. So this-

Turned into this-

In a month.

I always wait for an egg or a crow.

Thank you very much. No, I don't have any lavenders. They are so pretty though. I love all the colors, but figured I'd start with this pen since it will give me the most variety.

Hello Silkie people! I am going to be getting some Silkie chicks next month and am curious if you let them free range any? I have a variety of about 30ish regular feathered chickens that are in the coop at night and out all day, and wasn't sure if the silkies should be allowed to be out with them or if that would not be safe, thank you!

(They free range in a large wire fenced in yard complete with guard goat FYI)
