Silkie thread!

No, its my border/queensland mix Gus, his legs do look like a boxers. He loves all my chickens and is very protective.

That's cute

Didnt you say that you have an appointment at catdance to pick some birds out, I'm so jealous wish I was closer. Hatching her eggs will have to do I'm just setting a catdance batch today in my new brinsea advance cant wait!
Yes. My husband and I are making the four hour drive including ferry boat trip end of Feb. I've requested mixed eggs from Breeding quality pens and a pair or two from her breeding quality grow out pens. I'm making a weekend of it and will get a motel in Portland, Oregon for the night.
I'm testing my bator right now with layer eggs. Bought a new LED light this morning and just candled. Brown eggs and all 14 are fertile and developing. I can see embryos clearly and the air cell is perfect for seventh day. My set up is working well.
I am beside my self with anticipation. Every Catdance Silkie image I see takes my breath away!

My first batch of eggs from my own Silkies goes into lockdown on Sunday, I'm so excited! Some will be b/b/s and the rest are blue x blue cream (can't wait to see what those look like). I'd put some of them in the refrigerator and they're all pullet eggs, literally their very first. So I'm pretty impressed chicks are actually growing :D

Mumsy, What color exactly is the lighter partridge looking silkie in your picture? I loooove the color!!!
When I bought them from M Best at three months old she told me they were gray. The female is the lighter of the two. They have changed color quite a bit. I will take better pictures of under fluff and wings. I think they are probably Gray culls. But I love the color anyway. Picture taking time. Back in a minute!

It's a wind chill of -30f right now and it's very windy. It is actually not a good idea to use additional sources of heat in the winter because if you ever lose power their bodies are not adjusted to the cold and they can freeze to death. I have been giving them a small heated disk just this week since it is extremely cold but only at night to keep their body temps up. They made it over night quite well.
Thanks for correcting my naive knowledge about heating coops in an actual cold winter. I moved out of the east 20 years ago and happily married my California boy.

It makes sense to help the chickens adjust to the cold with their own heat!

Here is my little Marge Best hen. Possibly five months old.

The sun came out for just a moment and I took pictures that I hope will let all my more knowledgeable Silkie color aficionado's here a better clue than I what color she is or may be.

She is loaded with pin feathers in her crest and all over the rest of her body. Slow to feather.

Right wing.

Under fluff on her back.

Tail

Under her left wing.

Under fluff on her chest.

Pin feathers in her crest.

From above.

Please critique. It won't hurt my feelings. What ever color or non color she becomes is not important to me but if I do breed her I would like to know what you all suggest. She is correct in all important ways with feet, skin, eyes, and so forth.

Took pics of my 3 1/2 month old silkies it just stopped raining so they are a little wet. I

Im so happy with how they are filling out. I hatched most of them from Catdance!

Lovely flock!
Love your Lavs also the new chicks are doing great!
Thanks, so much!!
How beautiful they are. I am getting impatient with mine. My test hatch is due next week! I can't wait!
Hope it goes well!
How exciting for you... I had an 8 yr Miniature Horse diversion and am getting back to Silkies full swing lol! Im sure you will love the birds you get from Karen. I just got a couple from her recently and am very happy with them. Just put some eggs from them and my others in the incubator a few days ago!

Soooo beautiful!!
This morning I went out and my hen was in the nest box getting ready to lay her egg. I went out 2 hours later, and there was an egg, but it didn't look like her eggs do. It was round instead of oval, so it was short. Do you think it would still be her egg? Or could it have been one of the pullets?
One of my hens lays a different shapped egg every other day. I always hope it's a pullet but it never is. Pullets almost always have blood on their first eggs.

I just saw that you are from paso robles. My husband and I grew up there! We lived in paso up until 2 years ago. What a small world!
