Silkie thread!

Has anyone ever heard of silkie swallowing air. I think it has been discussed but i cannot find it. Is it bad? She also shakes her head but I think it's because she doesn't see much.

3 months old and we can't seperate them they will cry + the other one has it too. thanks for the info we will:D
You may also try putting VetRx on their nostrils and comb with a qtip or your finger. it's is a soothing aromatic that may help with respiratory issues.
How exciting for you... I had an 8 yr Miniature Horse diversion and am getting back to Silkies full swing lol! Im sure you will love the birds you get from Karen. I just got a couple from her recently and am very happy with them. Just put some eggs from them and my others in the incubator a few days ago!
Really gorgeous birds!
My first batch of eggs from my own Silkies goes into lockdown on Sunday, I'm so excited! Some will be b/b/s and the rest are blue x blue cream (can't wait to see what those look like). I'd put some of them in the refrigerator and they're all pullet eggs, literally their very first. So I'm pretty impressed chicks are actually growing :D Nikki
best wishes for a great hatch!
Thanks for correcting my naive knowledge about heating coops in an actual cold winter. I moved out of the east 20 years ago and happily married my California boy.:) It makes sense to help the chickens adjust to the cold with their own heat!
We live in a fairly cold area of NY (0 degrees last night) and have chosen to provide supplemental heat for our silkies. We don't provide heat for the LF egglayers, but the silkies seem more fragile. Our silkie pullets had started laying before Christmas and produced nice eggs for us until the cold snap set in. The silkie egg laying ground to a halt, even with supplemental lighting. After installing the heat source, it took a few days and then the silkies started laying again. If our heat source were to fail, I would bring the silkies inside, even if I had to put them in the bathroom tub.

Could it be gapeworm maybe?

I am wanting to buy silkie hatching eggs in a larger quantity any suggestions? They don't have to be from show quality but I deff don't want hatchery quality either!

Here is my little Marge Best hen. Possibly five months old.

The sun came out for just a moment and I took pictures that I hope will let all my more knowledgeable Silkie color aficionado's here a better clue than I what color she is or may be.

She is loaded with pin feathers in her crest and all over the rest of her body. Slow to feather.

Right wing.

Under fluff on her back.

Tail

Under her left wing.

Under fluff on her chest.

Pin feathers in her crest.

From above.

Please critique. It won't hurt my feelings. What ever color or non color she becomes is not important to me but if I do breed her I would like to know what you all suggest. She is correct in all important ways with feet, skin, eyes, and so forth.
isn't she a grey (silver partridge)? I think they are the same...someone might correct me...?

Alright, Oxine is here!!

Was it ChicksNherps who said it's about 2 teaspoons for a gallon of water? And do NOT activate it, right? Activating would kill them?
My plan is to put the humidifier in the coop, close the doors and leave it running for a while...but for how long is the question? There is good ventilation in the coop.
Any other useful tips I should know about all this??

To add to my list of 20 questions! lol How many times a day and for how many days do I do this?

Day 4. We have life! A couple look infertile, but quite a few have 'spiders' in them. Really hoping the father of at least some of these is Macho. Yes, my 'candler' is my galaxy s3's LED light

I think the mother of most of these eggs is this girl (not macho!), the one in the back with the cute bonnet crest. She's the one who's always in the nest box, and who has the loosest looking vent.

I can't find where I got 2 tsp, but I found one person say 7 drops per gallon so go with that. and yes do not activate it.
