You may also try putting VetRx on their nostrils and comb with a qtip or your finger. it's is a soothing aromatic that may help with respiratory issues.
Really gorgeous birds!
best wishes for a great hatch!
We live in a fairly cold area of NY (0 degrees last night) and have chosen to provide supplemental heat for our silkies. We don't provide heat for the LF egglayers, but the silkies seem more fragile. Our silkie pullets had started laying before Christmas and produced nice eggs for us until the cold snap set in. The silkie egg laying ground to a halt, even with supplemental lighting. After installing the heat source, it took a few days and then the silkies started laying again. If our heat source were to fail, I would bring the silkies inside, even if I had to put them in the bathroom tub.
Could it be gapeworm maybe?
Thank you.mine do that occasionally when they are stressed. It looks like a big yawn. I have not had any issues resulting from it though, but check her throat and nostrils make sur ethere is no gunk or boogies![]()
Going back to the book idea, if i have an egg turner, can I use it instead (without turning the incubator on)?The idea of the book underneath one end, is to tilt the eggs to one side. later in the day, move the book to the otherside, so they tilt the opposite way. This is in place of a tuner in your incubator.
Quote: 1) Realize that silkies originate from one of the coldest places on earth! If fully feathered and healthy, and allowed to acclimate to the climate, they are probably far heartier in cod weather than your LF egglayers.
2) Gapeworm was my first thought.
Larger quantity than what?...You pay for what you get. I purchased 2 dozen eggs and feel that I got a bargain that I have 4 growing chicks from them.I am wanting to buy silkie hatching eggs in a larger quantity any suggestions? They don't have to be from show quality but I deff don't want hatchery quality either!

When you get close to coming to town PM me and maybe we can meet up for a short chat.Didnt you say that you have an appointment at catdance to pick some birds out, I'm so jealous wish I was closer. Hatching her eggs will have to do I'm just setting a catdance batch today in my new brinsea advance cant wait!
Yes. My husband and I are making the four hour drive including ferry boat trip end of Feb. I've requested mixed eggs from Breeding quality pens and a pair or two from her breeding quality grow out pens. I'm making a weekend of it and will get a motel in Portland, Oregon for the night.
I'm testing my bator right now with layer eggs. Bought a new LED light this morning and just candled. Brown eggs and all 14 are fertile and developing. I can see embryos clearly and the air cell is perfect for seventh day. My set up is working well.
I am beside my self with anticipation. Every Catdance Silkie image I see takes my breath away!![]()
Oh my god, I really hope she doesn't have gapeworms1) Realize that silkies originate from one of the coldest places on earth! If fully feathered and healthy, and allowed to acclimate to the climate, they are probably far heartier in cod weather than your LF egglayers.

Alright, Oxine is here!!e
Was it ChicksNherps who said it's about 2 teaspoons for a gallon of water? And do NOT activate it, right? Activating would kill them?
My plan is to put the humidifier in the coop, close the doors and leave it running for a while...but for how long is the question? There is good ventilation in the coop.
Any other useful tips I should know about all this??
Perfect! Thank you. I found answers to all my questions.
