Silkie thread!

That's interesting. In my 1588 model, the temp is perfectly calibrated to my reptile thermometer/hygrometer but the humidity reading on the Genesis is ten percent off.

I use a digital probe thermometer and the reptile one in different corners of the bator to check for hot and cold spots. They are first calibrated to my room thermostat. The Genesis temp goes up and down very slightly with flucuations in my room temp such as when a door is opened. I don't think it's anything to worry about.
Exactly the same with mine! Humidity is always off by 10%!

Once you take your turner out, or decrease some of the mass inside the incubator, your temp may drop as well. There is a lot of space from the ground to the plexi glass in the incubator. I'm not sure if the incubator is reading up above and the lower level is lower in reality.

Very cute babies! I keep reading instances where people hafta give their chicks vitamins such as Poly-vi-sol without iron for health problems. Is this something that would be recommended to do for new chicks just in general? I get my order of 30 chicks on Monday and just want to give them their best chance after their long journey from Iowa to Alaska :) any tips would be much appreciated :) thank you!

u dont really want to overload them with too much preventitives all u can really do is feed them medicated chick starter and a mix of electrolytes and multi vitamin mix in their first gallon of watrr or so good luck though!!!!!!!

Hi All, First time poster/reader to this thread. Didnt really think silkies were going to be in my first flock, but alas they were there on saturday when i picked out my new babies and came home with a pair os silkie bantams, 1 white and 1 black. And are quickly growing to some of my most 'eyeballed' babies seeing as i have cleaned them both for krusty-butt already, and DW cleaned the white one again this morning.

Do silkies consistantly have an issue with this? I have cleaned them per how-tos that i have read on BYC, applied some vasoline to the vent to help prevent future instances.I think Either they just are prone to this and need to be observed closely for the first week or so? Or i didnt put enough vasolene....All you pros out there any insight would be great for the new silkie man here!

Thanks!

Ours are prone to it. My boyfriend used to raise chickens back in England including Silkies and he said he has never had so many issues with pasty butt as in the USA. Occasionally we will have another breed of chick which gets it, but it IS mostly our Silkies.

Well thats good to know, not as good to deal with, lol; but good to know regardless. Guess i will be keeping an eye on them for a while...does this pass with age or will i be wiping butts until the cows come home?

These are the only bantams i have currently, do bantams in general sleep more than the LF chicks (ie. BR's and black Ausies)? i feel bad just waking them up to check on them while all the others are running around playing...i figured they were smaller and not an "Active" bird so they will sleep more, or am i under-diagnosing and need to add some electrlyte or something?

Hi Everyone. I know it's been forever since I've had time to post and I'm sorry. Life has been a blur this past month.
PLEASE HELP...
I have an emergency and need some quick advice: One of my silkie chicks (4-5 weeks old) has a very twisted neck. The first I noticed symptoms was last night and I just thought she was looking at me sideways (like chickens sometimes do). However, this morning her neck is almost upside down. I'm so sad and frustrated for this helpless creature and don't have a clue how this happened. The LF chickens free range but these babies are in a tractor surrounded with 1/2 inch hardware cloth........Some of my LF chickens will try to peck through the little holes if given a chance, though.
-Is this condition cure-able?
-What can I give the chick to help it? (Prednisone, Vitamins?)
-Should I hand feed and water it? I don't think there's any way for her to get her head in the feeder and waterer?
-Is it contagious?
-Should I keep it isolated?
Any suggestions will be helpful

Hi All,
I need some advice from you Silkie lovers with more experience! I am pretty new to Silkies and I hoping you guys can give me some much needed advice. I have three 7 week old Silkie babies and I know they can be sort of challenging to sex. I would ask you guys for your thoughts and comments on these three. Please be truth full, I need to learn. You won't hurt my feelings :) I would like your thoughts on type, color, and sex. Here they are:
#1 (Blue or Black?Pullet??)

#2 (Blue/Lav?Roo?)

#3 (Buff Roo?)

Thanks so much for looking!!
Dark blue, blue, and buff. Way to young to evaluate or sex but they are lovely chicks. :)
Girl or boy?

Definitely more prone to pasty butt. I feed alfalfa leaf from day one and it helps a lot. I will usually only have a couple with a problem and gone by the time they are a week old. Yes, they sleep more than my LF chicks.
