Silkie thread!

My chicks will be 9 weeks this week...I see red wattles on 2, a redish comb on one of those...roos?

I can't remember who told me on here, but they said something about- if you see red wattles or comb before 12 weeks then probably a roo. True?

Some pics of my friend's little white baby

Before the bath, comb pics, girl or boy thoughts? S/He's about 5 or 6 weeks old.

Ice is babysitting, showing her the ropes!

After the bath fluffbuttiness

and last but not lease.... Ice can fall asleep anywhere!

All chickens have sex-linked genes in them.  But for sex-linking to work in determining the gender of newly hatched chicks, you have to breed for it.   Most silkie breeders have no desire for that for a number of reasons, starting with the birds would not be recognized varieties, and continuing to ending up without purchasers for a lot of known males--so what can you ethically do with them?

oh i would love to maybe breed in a patch that is only on females or something so only i can tell ya know that would be pretty cool

I'm really happy to help pass along the message of fire safety :)

So many people helped us out with donations and we were able to purcahse a baby barn and have it custom built. The colour is more mustard than the images show. Almost looks beige on my screen... anyway...

Pop door. It's floor level. Ah well. :p

One window in the back.

Being introduced to their new area.

Hope the frizzled silkie. I am thinking she is fathered by George Jr - my 1st generation sizzle. She has no beard and very little foot feathers.. but she has 5 toes. Her grandmother was a buff laced polish who was unbearded. That's the only explanation I can come up with as to why she is not bearded.

She'll make a good broody. Her mother was extreme. I mean EXTREME. Way more than your average silkie. Maybe the polish grandmother will help her not be extreme but enough to satisfy my broody love.

She has a vaulted skull. Still feathering out @ 7 weeks. She may look much better in a couple of weeks.

Doc (blue silkie I showed earlier) looks much better at 10 weeks. Wait.. Now she/he's 11 weeks.

Silkie X girl. I just love her. I think she has some barred rock in there. At least that's what Kev said. She was barred @ 3 weeks, but it's so vague now. Must only be fathered by a male with 1 copy.

Either way her grandfather is Jagger. Which means so much. He was my favourite rooster (tied with Steve of course).
What a great little building! I love your silkie cross. Very pretty coloring!
I think it's sooooo adorable to see the cockerel show the pullets how to lay on eggs, and try to get them in a nest box, cooing. He want's babies so much! He doesn't quite have the mating part down yet. They just look at him on the nest, and resume what they were doing. Makes me smile every time I see it.

I have observed this behavior also. I also once saw the roo protecting an egg that was laid in middle of the pen.

That was probably me. Hope you get some further input.

I had an unusual experience this AM. I was feeding my self-blue pair and the roo pecked my hand. As discipline, I held him down for a minute and the hen immediately flew at my hand with both feet forward, twice and was trying to peck me! Now we know why those girls have to do their play fight practice with the boys when they are growing up. :) By-the-way, I wasn't hurt at all.

Hello,
sorry to barge in like this but I have a concern with one of my silkie chicks and I know all of you have vast knowledge with silkies.

My two week old blue CatDance silkie chick, Melamie, just developed wry neck. I've never had a chick with wry neck before, and its quite terrifying!
I don't know what caused it, but I have been trying to give her vitamin e and some polyvisol in her water, but there has been no improvement over the past 2 days.
Her head started out just crooked to the side, but now it just hangs unsupported.

I've seperated her, but all she does is cheep pitifully and I don't think I'm doing enough for her! Any suggestions?
Thank you!

How old are our chicks ? Sometimes it takes weeks for major improvement. My last one was young.. only 3 weeks I think when she developed wry neck. It looked awful but she was always able to eat and drink on her own. Every time I was would approach she would go into the tucked head odd walk thing. This pretty much happened for the whole two weeks and suddenly she was like normal. It didnt ever happen again. I think she may have been bonked on the head by a bigger chick ? I left mine with some mild mannered chicks so she wasnt stressed by being alone.
