Silkie thread!

How does everyone keep their silkies so clean?!? Things are starting to melt here so it's muddy but what about the coop? I have shavings and they all look awful!
Are you talking about your white silkies?

I know it was near impossible to keep my whites clean when allowed outside when it was anything other than sunny and dry.

This is why I love partridge. They don't look dirty even if they are :p

I went out to check my broody with chicks later then usual today bc we had quite a bit of snow come down last night. Her little Silkie chick was strangled to death and the little Cochin now has what appears to be a broken wing :( I went and trimmed all of the fluff off her belly after I found the last strangled chick. The Silkie was stuck in her leg feathers and the Cochin was stuck to her butt :barnie
I don't think I'll ever use her as a broody again. So discouraging. My other broody Silkie was still preening and keeping herself tidy during the whole ordeal of hatching and such. It doesn't look like Ellie has been doing that. Her feathers are such a mess. She started with 8 and is down to 3. I hope she enjoys this experience, bc it'll never happen again :/

I would ask them over the phone what it means. The clinical signs show congestion in the lungs. Ask if it is CRD.

They should put it all in laymans terms for you!
I don't even know what CRD is.

I'll call them.
Thanks!

edit.
CRD = chronic respiratory disease. Duh.
Would make sense with one of the hens. I've had trouble with her in the past.

She is a lovely lady and her birds are amazing.
Thank you poulettes. I am just starting back up with Silkies after a twenty three year absence. I bought my eggs and chicks from three well known and respected breeders in Washington state on reputation alone. Marg Best, Sheryl Butler, and Karen Larson. I have not been disappointed.

I keep my White silkies in pens with either pine shavings or sterlized play ground sand. I use chick waterers or pop bottle waterers. Now that my weather is warming up, I bring them out into the orcahrd onto grass for half the day. The Grey roo and one of the White Catdance pullets are little pig pens so I keep their crests, beards, and muffs trimmed. They will be breeders their entire lives.

Mumsy, what is their birthday?

Gosh they are pretty! I especially love Big Foot!!

He's got some wicked streamers for 3 months!
Their hatch date was December 8, 2012.

Thank you! I always thought that chick 'Big Foot' was a roo from day one. He was so full of himself and upright. He is better in type at three months old than my six month old Catdance roo I just purchased. He is a keeper.
The little pullet 'Miss Peggy' is a real surprise. As a chick she was slow to keep up. Slow to do anything. I thought she was the only female. It looks like she may be the most type-y female white pullet I have yet. These four Sheryl Butler chicks surprised me. I thought I had three roos one female. It could very well turn out I have one male and three females. The joke will be on me.

That would be my guess as well!

I was asking because they are very close in age with my Doc Holiday. Doc was born December 16th.

I am going to settle it.. I'm going to call it a girl. Yep. I was wrong. I admit it lol.

The fermented feed really screwed up these guys' development. I was fermenting grower instead of starter and they grew VERRRRRY slowly. Feathered out VERY slowly too, so she is still filling in.

None of my birds were typey early. They all seemed to take their time to fill out.

I think Doc will look quite beautiful come summer..

Maybe I can convince my friend Jacqueline who has two boys from my original breeding birds to lend Chippie to me.

Here he is last fall. He was born last Easter! Yes I think I will borrow him :p
