Silkie thread!

i currently have 1 silkie, but am getting more in about 2.5 weeks once they hatch. The lady i am getting them from set a dozen and i am getting whatever hatches. I am wanting to make a separate silkie pen but ws wondering what is best for silkies? i dont wanna put them with my LF laying flock, so they will be getting their own home.

do silkies do alot of scracthing or are they more content in more of an enclosed run/coup?
They do fair well in confinement...BUT they are still chickens....they LOVE to scratch and peck..IF they can see what they are scratching at LOL

Why not rice? It is an excellent grain for chickens
I didn't think it was good for birds... but thinking back, I should add uncooked... because it expands, that was the reason

. I don't know if rice in FF would expand being in the water if it isn't hot?... if you use rice I would go with boiled brown or whole grain though.

I agree. Mine are fine on the days I leave them shut up in the coop, but they are always super excited when I open the pop door and let them out into their run (which is most days, really bad weather is the only thing that prevents them from going out and that's bc I don't want to walk through it to open the door).

On a sadder note, there was a brush fire at my house today :/ We didn't loose anything, thank goodness, but it came DANGEROUSLY close to my coop. If I had chosen to stay later at work it would have been an absolute disaster. The fire department came and put it out and I've been checking it every half hour to make sure it stays out since I'm super paranoid about it now. I have no idea how it started either. Our back hill was fine when I left for work this morning and up in flames when I returned. There's also a huge wood pile back there from a bad windstorm we had a few months ago!
It could have been SO much worse, but it still scared the dickens out of me!!!

yikes! i hate fire, and my boyfriend is reckless with it.

quick question... i dont have cayenne for my ff, can i use chipotle chili powder? all it is is chipotle chilis.

I'm wondering if my roosters aren't fertile yet?? so far I've incubated 3 eggs and none thus far have been fertile. The roosters are about 9 months old. Are they old enough to be fertile? I've never seen them get on the females.
