Every time someone suggests a breed, I have to run and look it up! A frizzle would be cute . . . my dogs are mutts, too. I just had no idea that birds could do that, too. My cockatoo and conure can't . . . I think I need a biology class now!

Cockatoo's and conures are completely different species. All chickens no matter the breed are all the same species. Just as all breeds of dogs are the same species.Every time someone suggests a breed, I have to run and look it up! A frizzle would be cute . . . my dogs are mutts, too. Have you tried Craigs list? You can find all sorts of things there. And if you're just looking to break your broody hen out of her broodiness, any chick will do.Mmm, good idea but no local silkie breeders around here. The local produce store has none either. Not even a couple of Isa Browns or anything!! Will keep m ears to the ground tho. Good idea, thank you.
You'll never know what you get from a feed store. One of the kids here at the farm has bought chicks at Shagbark Chick Days when they guarantee all chicks to be pullets. Well, each time she has ended up with a cockerel and rest pullets. They make great pets though. But if you're looking for good quality and pure breeds, definitely contact a breeder. Thanks for the info! She has five toes, but I'm not sure what color she is underneath. I really didn't know they mixed . . . and I'm a little irked to know the Feed Store sells birds incorrectly named.
Cute!
I'm interested as well, since we've also had a difficult time hatching out silkies.Hi, I got 18 hatching eggs from Catdance Silkies. It's day 22 and only four have hatched and that was yesterday. No hatches in more than 12 hours.
There are 11 eggs still in the incubator that looked viable at 15 days. I'll give them a couple more days just in case. I opened it long enough to take the ones that have hatched out (I also had other standard eggs and quite a few of them hatched yesterday morning). I don't hear any noise from the eggs that are in there. Not sure what I did wrong.![]()
Do you ever / often have late hatchers with the silkies? What do you run humidity at during the first 18 days and during the last 3 days? If you hatch silkies and other chicken breeds, do you do anything with different with the silkies?
I have a genesis 1588. Temp was stable at 100 +/- 0.5. I used the 'dry hatch' method. Humidity stayed between 25% - 45% during the first 18 days (mostly right about 30%). I raised it to 65% - 70% the last three days. Any advice for next time?
Thanks,
Shanna
I hatched twelve Catdance eggs in my Genesis 1588 by not raising the humidity until the first egg pipped. Lockdown didn't start until the first internal pip. They drown in the shell very easily. I ran humidity above 25 and below 45% until that first egg pipped. Then I slowly bumped it to 65% using a tube I pushed through an extra ventilation hole I put in the side. I dripped distilled water onto a sponge.Hi, I got 18 hatching eggs from Catdance Silkies. It's day 22 and only four have hatched and that was yesterday. No hatches in more than 12 hours.
