Silkie thread!

Love this thread for Silkies! I have two Silkies (blue-ish) that I have finally (with the help of great BYC'ers) put together with my Rhode Island Red's (that we've had for two years now, yes I've been lurking these boards a long time!) - one silkie is low hen on the pecking order and doesn't seem to want to be outside and is very happy in the coop my herself, Is this normal?

Splash? or blue?

Another questionable color.

All the others I'm guessing black.

Notice the 2yr old face. She loves the new babies.

I think it depends on the ratio of hens to the roo on keeping them together all the time. Some roos are more rough and/or lacking in manners than others from what I've seen and heard. Your ratio doesn't seem too low though. I think the girls need a break from the roo sometimes especially if he's flattening them out and banging around the smallest ones when they don't submit to him. I know that alot of people like to breed only in pairs or trios in a smaller pen and keep the hens away from the rooster most other times. I think I would have pulled the rooster out to "time out" and left the girls LOL

Was he trying to breed with her or was he showing her he was the boss? If it was a pecking order thing maybe it won't happen again...

Someone one on here was talking about an older hen pounding a young cockerel into the dirt and showing him some manners when he tried to jump her roughly. I need one of those type hens to pound my lavender cockerel into the ground a few times lol He's super rough and likes to pull on their crests and I end up with a ton of feathers all around. It's funny that when I keep him with the juveniles that are 3-4 months old he's always super sweet to them even letting them sleep under him and under his wings in the evening. He likes to chase the young boys around when I first put him in the pen in the morning just to remind them he's the boss (he spends the night in my garage) but other than that he's a doll baby.

Ok sorry that wasn't much help! LOL I don't think it's common for them to get seriously injured when mating but it's definitely possible and I'm sure it happens.

Kasey I think I can spot the splash chicks better in comparison to the others from the same hatch also when they are not under the red brooder light helps.

I think it's common for silkies to do that when in a mixed flock. Maybe you should get another silkie (or 5) for a buddy maybe even out their numbers a little.
I lurked on the threads here for months before I finally signed up and posted, there is just soo much information on here I spent forever just reading and taking notes!

Hmm my guesses are splash then blue (?) and the blacks some of them with the lighter bottoms look blue to me.
