Silkie thread!

What color could this little guy possibly be? It's about three weeks old now and was not yellow as a young chick like whites are, but more colored like a splash chick. But it's not showing any "splashiness" to its coloring. It appears more silvery with white wingtips and tail, but maybe that's just the black skin showing through white feathers? What did I get here?

For comparison here's my white and splash at around five weeks old. The splash has no tail. It got pasty butt after we brought the chicks home, so all those feathers had to go. :(

Almost looks self-blue, but also could be a silver based white like ChickNmamma mentioned.

How does the whole class thing work between non bearded and bearded silkies? I will be showing my white non bearded silkie tomorrow and I wanted to know if they compete against the bearded silkies( I probably look really dumb right now but I'm beyond the point of caring

). I ask because one of the other people from fair has really nice bearded silkies and I wanted to know if I will get crushed tomorrow or if his won't affect me too much. BTW non of his are white.
Non-bearded and bearded are judged separate. When giving out Best of Breed, I don't know if the bearded and non-bearded are put together then, but I know for each variety, they're judged separate.
What they do is award placings from 1st to however many entries there are in each division, for example; white cockerels, white pullets, white cocks and white hens. After each gender has been looked at, they give Best Variety and Reserve Variety to the best overall white. Same goes for each color (variety). After all Silkies have been judged, they pick the Best of Breed and Reserve of Breed.
I'm still getting started with all this showing, so someone correct me if I said something that wasn't correct!

In other words, your non-bearded will not compete against the person with the really nice bearded birds.

Hi everyone!!
We hatched our flock the week of Christmas (dec 27th?) and nobody has started laying yet, I know Silkies take about six months, but im really expecting to find an egg anyday now! Do you think it's possible or probably closer to July? The main reasson we hatched in the Winter was because we were hoping to have mature birds by Summer.
I had a pullet start laying at about 6 months. I've also had pullets start laying as late as 9 months. I've heard of some pullets waiting for a year or longer. Can't predict nature.

About how long does it take to get hatching eggs once they start laying, if you consistently have roos in with them? I think the males are already trying to mate them (not 100% Sure though. I think they're even trying to mating each other) they chase them (male or female) and grab their tail feathers with their beak.

I don't remember how long it will take to get fertile eggs. Hopefully someone will answer this one! I'm thinking it was soon after they start laying.

My pullets' very first eggs were fertile, and they were being mated by roosters who were younger than them, 4-5 months old. I cracked open the eggs to check for the 'bullseye' to be sure. I waited until they had been laying a week, then gathered some for a test hatch. All were fertile, 7 out of 9 hatched.

Any guesses as to what I might get if I breed this hen with my paint roo?

This is my roo, he is with my black hens right now but I was thinking about doing a test breeding between them. What coors do you think will be the out come?

Has anyone evr done this pairing before? If so, can you post pictures of the offspring?

Ok one last question! About how long after laying her first egg does it take for a Silkie to realize she's supposed to sit on it? Do you just wait for her to go broody? It must take a couple tries to get it right?

My eggs were fertile as soon as they started laying. The boys started first.. so by the time the girls started they were fertile.

A Silkie will go broody when she sees a pile of eggs (or rocks, or golfballs, or pinecones)... it is in their nature. They don't really seem to need a couple of tries. However - it is when it clicks for her. All you can do is encourage her.. with a pile of eggs, or rocks, or golfballs, or pinecones...
