Finally finished the new coop and run! I put the youngsters in to try it out today.

Love your coop and run!! The chicks must love it! :)

Thank you!

It's all done! :D

You can check out the interior on my coop page to see the set up. I am very pleased with it. :)
I see you are a writer as well as a photographer. What a great job you have done journaling your tragedy and recovery. The photo of the fire is heartwrenching but how wonderful to see life arise from the ashes. May God truly bless your new barn and all it contains.

X2. You really do deserve a big pat on the back. Thank you for inviting all of us along for the ride. Truly inspirational !

Thanks everyone. We're very excited to have it done. We have to finish the inside. I'm still debating on using sand or wood chips inside. We went with sand in the run. I think I'll wait a couple days to see how poop removal goes! Does anyone have any opinions on liter inside the coop?

It's been quite a while since I've posted on here. I don't have any new silkie pics at the moment, but I should soon, I have 4 chicks growing up right now, I'll update on their progress. Also, lo and behold, one of my girls started laying again last week. I've been without silkie eggs for almost 5 weeks.. I do have a picture of two more silkie/oegb cross chicks. The mother of the orangish chick is 7 years old, the more yellow chick's mother is 5 years old. And their father, my silkie, is about 8 months

Little Lila scratching around like a mad woman.

I decided to name this chick Nosy Rosie. She's very nosy. lol And I'm thinking it's a girl. Still too young to tell but sure looks girlie compared to the other 3 that are definitely boys. Keeping my fingers crossed!

So pretty! Where do you get the bands for the legs? I was looking for them a while back for my 5 lavender chicks, wanted a way to tell them apart while they were growing and I was trying to decide which pairing to keep.

No, Paint and Splash are genetically two different things, although they can look the same (sort of).  The way to tell the difference is when they are little chicks, the Splash will look light gray - a Paint will be white or yellow and have the black spots and those spots will not move.  If they told you your bird is a Splash, then it is probably a Splash, no matter what it looks like now.

If you cross a Splash with a Black you will get Blue.  If you cross a Paint with a Black you will get Paint.

The Splash carries two copies of a gene called Blue.  One copy makes a Black bird Blue.

The Paint carries a gene called Dominant White, it can carry one or two copies, and that white covers up almost all colors with white - with a few black feathers here and there.  Paint is a "new" color - and it took awhile to make it.  So they are still being "worked on".

Ok thank you! That was very informative!!

Paint then a white.
thanks!

Can anyone suggest somewhere I can get removable leg bands? I'd like to be able to mark the chicks easier for gender ID in pictures, some of them kinda look the same on camera. LOL
