Silkie thread!

Thank y'all I am going to do just that.... After looking up mareks I am a little worried. Her eye that she can open is farther back if that makes any since. I can't get a good picture of it but it doesn't look right. I also notice my barred rock has a weird right eye that is farther back like that..

Hoping your flock pulls through!!!! There are some amazing people on this thread- I know you will get plenty of advice and suggestions.
Well be sending lots of positive thoughts to you all.

Hay everyone

Quick question, newish to chickens...Is it possible that my 9month old silkie is broody? She has been spending a lot of time in the nest box, there aren't any eggs that shes sitting on as the kids check for them twice a day.

If she isn't egg bound, she is probably broody. Has she been laying anything? Silkies are notorious early brooders. Try giving her some eggs or golfballs or something to make her happy

I have a 2 week old baby silkie that I awoke to with a hurt leg :( She was fine yesterday and I'm not sure how it happened. Anyone know what I can do for my little bitty? I feel so bad for her/him. Pretty sure she's in pain too

She cries when she's trying to walk about. I have her in a donut shaped cloth to help her feel better some. At times she tries to get out but as of right now she's settled in and resting in it. Please help me help my baby. I'll be forever grateful. Thank you to all who respond

Thanks everyone!!! So glad y'all are so supportive on this forum! I placed some of the salt water on her eyes and she opens them every so often. I don't imagine I should place them in her eye while they are open correct?
Also just so I can be sure I have this right. I need to go to the feed store and get either tylan or something called duramycin? And get some vet ex to rub on their combs and such? Anything else I need to pick up while I am there?

I am going to deep clean there cage I have them in right now and the entire room they are staying in.

Starting Fri I began giving Lady Mary (my splash silkie) the vitamins and electrolytes. I trimmed under her eyes a bit and she was dusted (as well as the other 3 chickens and coop/run!- better safe than sorry!)
She has perked up quite a bit and now instead of just laying about she wants to explore (in a whole seperate area of the yard the other chickens never go to)

The only problem now is I checked her and I still see mites! Is that normal? Did I do something wrong? She is quite fluffy, so does it take a few applications (and how often should that be??) to be cleared up or should I combine the Sevin dust with something else for maximum results?

Thank you! Poor girl...starting to feel better, but still in quarentine :( Feel so bad, but I know it's for everyone's good!

Glad she's opening them every so often! That's encouraging...!!

for your baby. Do you have any idea how she is hurt? Its really hard to give advise when we don't know what is wrong.

I believe the saline solution can be used when her eyes are open - to flush all the guck away from her eyes, just like you would use eyewash to clean everything from your eyes if you got something in them.

Yes, go to the feed store and pickup duramectyn (or tylan although I have no knowledge of that one) which is for bronchial infections. The instructions on the package will probably be for cattle, you will need to reduce the dosage for the birds. And yes, the vet ex for the combs to help clear up any congestion. You will want to mix up only enough that they will drink it completely in 24 hours. Once mixed it looses its strength. If you do not see a drastic improvement in 24-36 hours then the medication is not treating what is wrong, and you will have to try a different one. There are many different strains of infections, not all respond to the same medication.

When you clean the cage check for any moldy or mildew corners - hopefully we can nip this problem early. If they are in a room make sure they have lots of air coming and going in there, and keep the moisture to the minimum. Warm, damp stagnant conditions are the worst thing for birds. While you do want to avoid drafts that doesn't mean they don't need a lot of fresh air.

Hopefully the medication works for them, let us know how it goes.

I am glad she is doing better, those mites are awful and they can kill a bird. The Sevin dust will work, but slowly. Does she dust bathe in the dirt? If you put some Sevin dust and fireplace ashes in her dusting hole it may help her get rid of the mites. Some Silkies do not dust themselves well. If you can still see the mites, keep dusting her. I have the pour on ivermectyn for really bad infestations - it only takes a teeny bit and it is a systemic that kills anything that bites the bird. If these are feather mites it doesn't work on them though - because they never bite the bird - only eat the feathers.

ChickNmamma,

Right now she is quarantined to a oversized bin- I don't have a seperate outdoor quarantine space outside where she can access grass/dirt at her free will :( We rent, so I only want to push my luck with so many coops lol. She does get out during the day & I have seen her dusting in the bin, which I also have dusted. Her feathers appear to be in fine shape, so I don't think they are eating them. Maybe I should look into getting the pour on kind then- I do think there is a bit less, but still so much. I could be dusting forever. I don't know how long she's had these, what toll it's taken on her already and I would like for the poor thing to just be healthy so she can live a healthy and happy life now- bug free!
