Silkie thread!

I got two BO chicks from Coastal about 4-5 months ago just starting to lay eggs I've got two now. :) I know its so weird having a hen challenge me. Here they are younger.

Their much bigger and filled out now. I need to get some recent pics.

So weird, my BO girls are the sweetest. My Barred Rock can be a turd...she pecks at spots on my clothes and no one else does so I think she uses the spots as an excuse to peck. She won't let me touch her and turns to act like she might be angry if I do touch her. My BO'swill not only let me touch them, they will let me pick them up too. All the same age and all raised together so it's just personality difference.

That's what I did this morning petted her a little and she attacked me. She also runs up and starts pecking my clothes and me hard. My friend said she would love to have her.

I can't see much from those pics, so it's both eyes? Can you get someone to hold her and hold pull the eyelid open so you can get a better pic? Is there any kind of yellow looking stuff down in the corner of her eye? If it is upper respitory there should be other symptoms , wheezing, sneezing , nasal discharge etc.

It's both eyes it took me 30 minutes just to get those. I don't know how comfortable I would feel holding her lids open and taking a picture, I can try again to get my camera to be focused when she has them open. A minute ago when I went to check she had one eye open about as far open as it is in the picture. That's as far wide as she can open them . I don't notice any yellow was in her eyes. She does have a little crust formed on one nostril. No sneezing anymore though. About a week ago she was before her eyes shut.

Poor little thing and she probably just wants to be left alone. I would be giving the antibiotics. I have no experience with tylan, but have had success with duramyacin , doxycycline and tetracycline . Just depends on what you have readily available . If you are using water soluable
Antibiotics, the trick is to make sure she is drinking enough. If the sneezing has stopped, she may be on the mend.

Wow, they really do look swollen. Her eyelids look puffy too!

It sounds like she is having some improvements from having the antibiotic in the water. That is a good thing! Are you still using the saline flush to clean out the goop? I think the crusty stuff was probably discharge, but if it was from the eyes or the nose I don't know. It sounds like she is improving though - and if you have another bird with similar symptoms I would start her on the antibiotics too - and keep them separate from the flock and keep a close eye on the rest of your birds. I had one rooster that had its eye go back in the socket, I think he got pecked in the eye in a rooster fight though. He had no other symptoms (except for running away from the other rooster) and he is fine now. Here's hoping your girl recovers completely too!

Quote: Well, they certainly do not have a rock's leg colour, but if they are from hatchery stock that could be it. Also, the one in the back has sinificantly more developed wattles, and I can't see its tail--so it may be a boy?

The orpingtons I had were very standoffish. Calm, but completely uninterested in any interaction with humans. My rocks from an exhibition line have always been extremely sweet, but they have personality, unlike the orps.

Today was just the worst day possible on my little farm!!! Watched helpless as a fox literally raced in and snatched my two best silkie girls, Meg and Sally. It all happened too quick and I am devastated. I was so cranky and can't believe how **** brazen the huge red ******* was to grab two at once. I have cried like a baby all afternoon and still can't believe it happened.
