Silkie thread!

I have a Dilemma. I got a rooster. Silkie splash roo. I have had him for a while but he isn't fertilizing my silkie hens' eggs. I want him to have babies with my hen as he is super sweet. But he isn't doing he deed.

the guy said he was 10 months old..give a few months, his spurs half an inch long.

I see his do the wind thing but the farthest he's gotten is pecking het head. I don't think he knows what he is doing.

I hope he isn't infertile as I'd love to have more chickens like him. And increase my flock.

is there something I can do to help?

Well, if he is just learning leave him alone. He will probably get the hang of it if he is doing the wing dance, pecking their heads is to see if they will squat for him. If you think he needs training - do you have somewhere you can put him near other roosters so he can learn from watching them? Don't put him IN with them, just so he can see them....

Some rooster will not mate when you watch them, so I have to ask how do you know the eggs are not fertile? Have you been setting them and nothing grows?

I was able to give my silkies a coop upgrade this afternoon! yeah! they won't cross the line into the 'new area' lol. they're so funny! I had a lot of ripping out to do, that took the longest part of it. the rest was just pallets and pressed strand board stuff. aka, fake plywood. I had all that stuff lying around, so it was a free upgrade for them! I want to fix up a couple things on the inside tomorrow, but thankfully i was able to get it all done so that it is predator proof for the night, yeah!

now to figure out how to make the rest of it waterproof. whoever built it before, did a horrible job and any time it rains, it gets wet in there. probably why they get coccidiosis all the time!

We used tin to water proof our coop and area it works great the rain just runs off and they stay nice dry and warm :)

it blows in through the vents' basically they had 4 walls, and the roof is a slant. with the two sides of the metal roof, instead of having the wood go up to a point on top, they left it open and added wire. well, it is quite open, so all the rain blows right in. I tried covering it up, but then they get frost bite in the winter. snow blows in there too and it is like a big snow drift in there!
