Silkie thread!

the last sentence is the sad truth! hahaha

I have a splash hen....she is the best....but I would die over a jet pure black silkie! I think I may get some of catdance's whites sooner or later this year for show.
here is my pitiful roo. he looked at your roos and he decided to lock himself in the coop and never come out. LOL
They're both beautiful. Just because they may not win at a show, doesn't mean they're pitiful! My first two silkies were a very rough looking blue rooster and a black hen. They were both absolute sweethearts, especially the rooster! I've never had a chicken before or since that actually 'begged' to be held. He would wait outside the door, making gentle clucking sounds, and as soon as I sat down, he would hop onto my lap and just sit there snuggling and enjoying the petting. He was taken by a hawk, unfortunately

But you should see my current favorite boy's father! Let me see if I can find a picture...

The only thing he has going for him is foot feathering. that head, yikes! But paired with a typey hen, he produces some nice chicks, who just so happen to inherit his foot feathering, such as my boy. Thankfully, the apples fall pretty far from this tree

He is a sweetie though, and actively participates in chick raising. He even helped one of his hens raise turkey poults!

Kind of hard to see, but those chicks he's snuggling with are turkey babies!

such a hansome fella! I thought roos were mean to the chicks! so beautiful!

in order to make my new chickies become attatched with me I will pick out a few faworites and hanle them often. so far my top fav is my OE cross roo, leven. I love him sooooo much! he loves to be held and waits at the brooder lid! he already is good at protecting his hens too! has them stand behind them while he stands in front of them for protection! hes too cute!

thanks for sharing!

Girls or boys they are super cuties! I got my first silkies at the same age (4-6 weeks) and 3 are for sure boys and we are pretty sure so is one more for grand total of 3-4 out of 5 cockerels! They are so hard to sex and often times you just don't know until there is an egg or a crow (we have a crowing and not one egg).

We will keep our fingers crossed for you and congrats on the fluffy butts.

Okay, so the cockerel I posted earlier was basically raised by my paint rooster. Do you think they will be fine once he matures?

I'd say he should be, but that all depends on the roosters' personalities. My bantam cochin rooster matured long before my five sikie roos and they all tolerate each other just fine. I think that's because he learned to accept them as a part of the flock before they became fully fledged roosters. I don't know if that would be the case putting two mature roosters together. My guys will chest bump, have crowing contests and try to disrupt matings when they see them, but there's never been serious fights. The only injury I've noticed on a male was a scab on one of my silkie roo's combs, but I don't know if he got that from bothering the wrong hen or scrapping with another rooster. Three of my silkie roosters who were brooded together still hang out occasionally when they're not trying to impress the ladies.

Selling this beautiful young lad? gorgeous! is he pure silkie, or is he a cross? are his feathers pure silkie feathers? I think I JUST fell in LOVE!:love

Don't tell the rest of the flock but I'm convinced this is the most gorgeous bird I have ever owned and one of the prettiest I have seen (of course I may be jaded, but most people who meet him are just as taken). We thought he was simply blue when we picked him, in fact we were worried about having three blues and wanted variety so one was smooth sizzle (so I think there's cochin in there somewhere but don't know how it works and they have 15+generations so far so...), one frizzle and the other silkie also pictured in my pictures. Imagine our surprise and delight when that beautiful leakage of color started to show.

So here is my "did I do that..." for the day. This proof yet again birds of a feather...and all that dribble is true and that addicts will drag down the ones they love without regard for their well being. I have, I am almost ashamed to admit it publicly, hooked my daughter on poultry... We have her signed up for BYC now and I responded to the above while she was still signed in. (How awkward)

Welcome to the dark side Not Peeps Peep

Well as of this morning 4 of 6 eggs have hatched. 4 little yellow balls of fluff, with a little brown on them, so I'm thinking they will be white. White moms, blue dad. 2 of them don't have their land legs yet, hopefully they will figure it out today. I hate it when they hatch like that. I'm a nervous wreck until they start walking on their own. At least having a momma to sit under helps and they aren't flopping around. Hopefully the other two eggs hatch today. :)
