Silkie thread!

I hear peeps! I will update later, I don't want to make momma nervous poking around under her. It's hard not to constantly look when they are a room away from me in the house! lol
OMGoodness! I would never be able to stay away if they were in the house. No way. I had never even thought of it before as I've only had older chickens in overnight a few times. The chicks have always been outside. I would just have to be in there all the time looking. I am known to stand in the house and just watch the chickens out the window. Sometimes I spend hours outside and can't get myself to leave them. Endless entertainment.

Just got my first two silkies today! They are 5wks old. Im sure they're girls, but ya never know... what do yall think?

Q-tip

normally, around this age the males will have big combs and streamer-like feathers in the back of the crest. you look like you have 2 girls. here was my roo around their age....

actuailly this was him at maybe 2 months or 1....idk. all the pictures above were of him older....but here was him at 5 weeks.....

he was the ugly white one there in the middle.....as you see, he has a large walnut like comb, with streamers already coming in.

another way to tell silkie gender is by the way they stand. here is my roo and hen:

as you see here, my hen is standing low to the ground. the rooster is standing tall and proud.
hens stand low, males stand tall.

another way to check is by looking at their shank sizes. thicker and bigger shanks will be makes and smaller shorter and thinner shanks will be females.

hope this helps!

(oh and here is how long roo legs will look. this was my roo at about 4 months?)
his legs

him compar3ed to my hen when younger (my hen was 2 weeks older so she was a bit bigger in size, but he was taller. (she was prone to hiding ALOT)

here was his comb at about 4 months?

Well as of this morning 4 of 6 eggs have hatched. 4 little yellow balls of fluff, with a little brown on them, so I'm thinking they will be white. White moms, blue dad. 2 of them don't have their land legs yet, hopefully they will figure it out today. I hate it when they hatch like that. I'm a nervous wreck until they start walking on their own. At least having a momma to sit under helps and they aren't flopping around. Hopefully the other two eggs hatch today. :)

Congratulations! I'm so excited for you. We had our first hatch of chicks ever in October and I was a nervous wreck. Terrifyingly eggciting stuff. Best of luck and good health to them all.

Just curious what color silkie chicks will I possibly get concidering there father is a Easter egger/Newhampshire red/Silkie cross (wild type in color) and their mother was a full blooded partridge silkie.See I gave the partridge hen and the wild type silkie mix to a friend of the family long story short a fox got to the hen and I now are waiting the arrivals of her unhatched eggs and I was wondering would they all be partridge?i would post pictures of the roo and hen but I'm not sure how .

Lol!!! I can't help laughing at him just laying in your lap like that!! That is priceless! Thank you for all the info. I just started keeping chickens in Aug.2013 and I'm hooked. I'll have to keep myself in check so that I don't go overboard! I'm trying to get educated about shows so I can one day get my kids into it. Especially my 9yr old daughter. She loves primping up my bunny and her dolls so it might be right up her isle!

hahahah

showing would be great! I was hoping to do it with this roo and my jap roo but they are both not show quality and have major faults.
I started keeping chickens 3 years ago....I didn't really care I only wanted eggs.....then I got hooked into hatching. LOL my first broody hatched 5 chicks for me, in 2 separate hatches.....I felt bad having her sit for 42 days but it was well worth my new obsession! now I have 5 full grown, and 12 chicks....I NEED to get rid of some of my new roos....oh well. with 17 chicks I want more and more! i tell myself: STOP IT ASHLEY STOP! hahahahah the night I took all my chicks out of the bator.....I was heartbroken. for 21 days I slept in my room listening to the hum and looking at the soft red light of my bator. 3 days before the hatch I would listen to my little chirping, calling into the world among them.

yes my chicks are cute.....but they are not cute at the same time. I forgot how much they POOP! LOL I may just need to curb my obsession sooner or later, or just hatch and sell, hatch and sell.

For easter I may end up hatching catdance silkies for showing. with 1 small coop. a medium, and a show elevated coop (can hold max 5) I don't think I can have anymore!
