Silkie thread!

Im a new silkie lady here, question...I've heard a lot about the color "pure black" being favorable in silkies and I was just wondering does that mean black with no other shades to it?, I'm assuming?....Both my black silkie hens have a weird shade of green to them, is that common? I have never seen that before. They're parents are a black rooster and a splash hen. Any comments back would be appreciated:)

do these feet look of to use either one of these Roos for breeding?

the feet look lightly feathered....normally people want to breed full feathered feet to get nice young out of it...but if you are just breeding as pets go right ahead! for show, I would find a more feathered roo.
here were my roos feet when he was younger.

normally for showing you want a nice feathering down the middle toe.

hope this helps!

We were recently given two Silkies and told they were both hens. I believe the bigger one is, but not so sure about the smaller one. Can anyone help me out and also give an approximate age? I'm very new to chickens in general, so any silkie tips/knowledge you may have would be great!
Bigger girl, Lucy.

hmmm....they both liike like roosters to me......maybe about 5 months old or so? its just a guess.....but it does seem like you have 2 roos.....do they stand tall or stand low to the ground? are their combs flast and about the size of a dime?

The bigger one stands pretty low most of the time, unless something perks her attention, and she doesn't really have a comb that I can see. The smaller one stands a little taller and has a comb, but it's not flat. More wrinkly and split down the middle. Neither seems to have large streamers, if any.

Confusing little chickens! :)

So my sons silkie hatching eggs go into lock down this wed. Hes wanting to show them so I need some information. Is there some books or guides for showing chickens? silkies in particular. They will be buff silkies from a breeder in PA. I've read the little prep guide on sundownsilkies.com but was looking for a book for him to learn more. Here are some pics of the breeders buff silkies off his facebook page. I don't know much about silkies but I think they are nice. And I know even if you have show birds don't mean the off spring will be show quality. That's one reason I'm looking for abook or i'll be on here a lot asking wich birds he should show.
