Silkie thread!

I pretty much get an egg per silkie every day, unless they are broody (which is often). The reason they are considered bad layers is because of how often they go broody.

Almost all breeds are like this. The breeds with a reputation for laying fewer eggs are generally the same breeds that have a reputation for going broody. Though there are a few breeds that are sometimes thought of as seasonal layers. And there are individual birds of different breeds who simply lay very infrequently..

If i breed my black silkie rooster and a blue split to lavender hen and a splash split to lavender hen will half of the offspring have the lavender gene even though the father doesnt cary it only the mothers do? Cuz i have 10 in the bator now from that and i am planning to sell them but if some of the chicks are going to be split to lavender then i will want to say that.

I also want to sympathize with Colie on her loss.

also 9on cull thing (last thing), i didnt specify that i was referring to the times rarely when someone says they had sometimes dozens to hundreds hatch after buying, and mostly roosters, and that some will come and take/buy alot of them together all at once, so was just guessing that they dont just keep dozens or more of roos all alone, or have hens for them all (unless they do fine in flock of just cocks and few to no hens, and are quiet enough to not be nuisance). ??? wasnt meaning on small scale were they were already beloved and could afford to take time to find great homes (yes know im still not ever getting silkies off of here now. lol)...

on a differant note could/should those that have them, send extra or test eggs etc, to colie <3, to help her have something to work at and look forward to? i know its easy for me to suggest, as i have non, but still good idea, im probably late on?

If one parent is split to lav and the other sn't, half the chicks will inherit a copy of lave and be split to it, and half will not. And you WILL NOT be able to tell which are which. I would VERY STRONGLY recommend that you NOT say that the chicks are split to lav. It is one thing to say that it is a possibility as one of the parents was, but that hte other wasn't. There are a lot of people thinking they have lav or split to lav birds that are not--because breeding choices and records were not kept to ensure that splits really ARE. Also, since the birds split to lav are blue & splash, even if they have two copies of lavender, you will NOT be able to distinguish them from blues or splashes that are not lavender. I personally feel you should not make the claim at all.

Thinking of Colie as I post this...(Wishes I could put them all in a box and ship them to her.)

I have 19 babies hatched and 4 more to go....This has been one of my best hatches in along time.

I also picked up two beautiful buff roosters. NO BLACK and they are a beautiful buff/blonde color. I am not too crazy about the older roo's comb but I can work on it. The other has the perfect little comb. Thinking these will be great for my lavenders I wanna work with. Very exciting day!
