Silkie thread!

Chickens are hard to photograph to show their best qualities, but from what I can see I would say PQ. He appears to have a long back, a so-so crest and cushion and red in his comb.

Thank you for the reply! I'll list him locally.

Honestly he is too young to tell. I would at least give him some time to grow into his self. He looks better then PQ at this age. I would not get rid of him yet.

For what it's worth, he didn't seem so peeved when I saw him. Lol! My hen was grumpy also. Some just don't take to show life well.

I agree, he's much too young and at that stage where they just don't look like much. After years of raising them I can still walk through my coop and wonder who replaced my birds with those stunning things I keep finding. They can change a lot within the first year.

Hannah..... Thanks! I forgot Josh was going to be there or I would have looked him up to say hello. Did he bring bring the brown leghorns? They were gorgeous!

sorry, off topic. I got my first 5 silkie chicks early April. Well 2 turned out to be cochin and 2 of the others didnt make it. (new mom, i think she squished one and the other got too cold.)
anyway, so I have one "blue". How do I tell the difference in sex. I have been looking at all the pictures and I dont see it.

Mine has some spiky things on the top of the head that are dark black, but I dont know if those are feathers and normal or if that makes him a he.

any help appreciated.

In other words, yourself?

Haha..... Nope not myself!! If you read where I'm from, you might realize we are from the same state, but different locations. AND if you were familiar with user names on BYC you might realize that the ebay user name was similar to the persons BYC user name, and from there you could look up her web page and see more pictures of her birds. I just know her from the SC thread.

Guess I misunderstood. You were signing your name; I thought you were identifying "her," lol. and of course, your Carolina Ckicken Keeper name appears at the left. Lots of folks have different user name, particularly on auctions, so I wasn't really sure.

No, that is the way everyone I know uses it. Pet quality is not show or breeding worthy. Breeder quality is not show-worthy, but has redeeming features that make it useful for breeding. SQ is a bird who has no DQs, few defects and should fare well in competition. Exactly what traits make a bird one or the other can vary a bit, and different breeders have different preferences to which they give more weight.

An example, I have an EXCELLENT young partridge pullet in all areas except that she has 6 toes per foot. I also have a very typey, excellently coloured partridge cockerel who has only for toes per foot. They cannot be SQ as they both possess a DQ. However, those two traits mitigate each other, and they will likely parent some very nice offspring who will be SQ. I consider them BQ for that reason. Some would not consider them BQ due to the presence of DQs--allowing only for defects. Personally, toes are one of the easiest things to work with and correct. I'd much rather work with a bird who has bad toes than one who has bad wings or even worse, bad type.
