I have week old silkies hatched by their mothers. How old can they be to be outside in a protected pen with their mothers with or without a lamp. I have them still in their boxes. I am going on a trip and neighbors will be watching them. I don't want anything to happen via my guessing. When can they go outside with house on ground making it easier for these babies. Thanks on advance
If the momma doesn't mind it should be ok - are you on good terms with her? Our hens are so comfortable with us we can handle them, collect their eggs from under them, etc.
We handled our feed store Dominique hatchery chick when we bought her at 8 days old and it was a quick bond on the ride home since she never had a broody momma in her life. She was the last of 3 different chicks and we wanted 2 Doms but she was the only Dom left at end of season. Unfortunately after 19 days old she died of a sudden seizure. It happens with chicks. We lost an Ameraucana chick 4 weeks earlier yet her sister grew up fine. Just never know why.
The best age is 4-5 months old before putting juveniles in with adults. And before that they have to be separated by a fence where they see each other but don't co-mingle for about a month with each other before removing the fence barrier. Even then there will be a pecking order they'll establish amongst themselves possibly with some pecking or squabbling. We allowed our 4 month old juvies time on one side of a fence to let the older hens get used to the newbies. Then at 5 months they were put together on the main flock side. It's less stressful for all birds involved not to have to fight so much for territory because they are somewhat acclimated with each other. Never put smaller/younger birds with older/bigger birds. At 5 months the Silkies are big enough to be on equal size status with the adult Silkies. Just MHO.
Some times this goes smoothly and sometimes you can get a real bully or two. I would give it a week and let them together watch see how it goes. Some pecking order is normal.
If there's a big size difference you would want to wait till the young ones are close to the same size before you put them all togeth
i am its just that i have 2 that are about 2 weeks older than the other 4 chicks and i also have 3 adults 2 hens 1 rooster. Im wanting to move the 2 older juvies into the main coop with the adults they are close to the same size as the adults. another thing im worried about is are they old enough that they wont get to cold at night they are about 6-7 weeksit is about 50 at nite here but 80+ during the dayOk, I thought you were trying to move younger ones in with adults. Best of luck with them![]()

Looks like a rooster to me too.
I think your right on the roo. I usually acclimatise them by leaving them outside for a week or so during the day and give them extra places to hide in the coop.
