Silkie thread!

Your feed store will carry wormer. Valbazen in the cattle section works great for chickens and kill all worms. 1/4 cc for bantys and Silkies.
Dose again in 10 days.

700

So do it when I get it then do it again in 10 days and then you're done for a while or every 10 days? And it just goes straight in the water? Sorry for all the questions just like to make sure I do everything right for happy chickens!

Thanks for all the help! I've never wormed any of my silkie(4 of them now 5) but I think I'm going to start soon. I only have one vet near me and it's an avian vet. Do you think that would cover chickens? I really don't want to have to drive 2 hours to get to one but I would if I really really had to for a sick bird.
Avian vet would cover all birds. Your lucky, I don't have an avaen vet. One of the vets in the Office near me is not a certified avian vet but he has been learning since I've been bringing in chickens the past couple of years. I try to fix them myself but this winter was a bad one and I lost several birds. Only 1 I took to him died so apparently he's learning fast. lol The closest avian vet for me is over 2 hours away. Too far to drive in my car.

I actually really happy now because I was thinking it would be only for like small birds and stuff but I will definitely be paying them a visit in the future for a check up on my new hen that I got!

Do it when you get it, then again in ten days. Then your done for awhile. You don't mix with water its 1/4 cc dose for each bird. Most people just open the beak put wormer in with a dropper then quickly let go so they can swallow it. I don't like doing that I'm always afraid it will go down the wrong pipe so I have a large needle and inject those dried meal worms with it and feed it to them. I've read some people use little pieces of bread. You have to be careful no one runs up and grabs someone else's dose.

I have two broodies trying to to share 5 eggs. My partridge hen was the original sitter for them, but my older white handicapped hen has decided to help. I have been taking Dolly, the handicapped hen out with the flock during the day. She can't use ramps, so it keeps her out of the nest box. She isnt panicky at all and just hangs with the flock, but at night she tries to sit on the eggs again and pushes Henley off the eggs. I found Henley sitting on a fresh egg, while Dolly was on the marked clutch this morning. Is it okay for them to share responsibility like that? They don't fight, just sharing. Its kinda funny actually, but Im not sure how it will work.

They will share responsibility when they hatch.

Is that given by mouth or in their water?

I've been worming my chickens with "Ivermectin" which is a one-dose injectible paste wormer tube - about $7 and lasts a long time. Approved by my breeder and our vet who does exotics, birds, cats, and dogs. It is effective against the dreaded Gapeworm, Tapeworm, etc.

For chickens the paste is NOT given orally but on the SKIN under the chicken's wing. I don't use other wormers because some of my chickens eat/drink a lot and others not so much so I prefer an exact dosage method. A lot easier than mixing wormers in waterers or feeders or not knowing how much the chickens have ingested.

Ivermectin paste dosage: One drop equivalent per pound of bird's weight. Example: If chicken weighs 5-lbs we put 2 drop equivalent under one wing skin and 3 drop equivalent under the other wing skin. For a 2-lb Silkie we put one drop equivalent under each wing. We do this in the evening after chickens go to roost as they are calmer then. We guess-timate the paste drop equivalent on a Q-tip and use a fresh Q-tip for each bird. I do this 3x/year. Larger flocks probably should be 4x/year.

Some say Ivermectin doesn't work on birds. Excuse me, but I just got my vet's lab report and my hens are worm-free 3 years in a row, thank you!

We also use an organic OMRI product called POULTRY PROTECTOR very effective against lice/mites/scaly leg on hens and coop - directions on bottle. No poison dusts or DE for our girls!

It all depends on how well your handicapped Dolly will do in her momma duties. If she's had chicks before she'll do fine as long as she and Henley aren't fighting. I have two Silkies that go broody together in a box but if they actually had eggs one Silkie is too combative to share if there were real eggs under them.
