Silkie thread!

My birds are breeding stock from show quality lines. The partridge is a genetic throwback from one of my whites. I had an entire hatch of 5 whites 4 months ago, and the hatch before 2 black, 3 blue, 1 splash, 4 white, and 1 partridge. This last hatch i have 5 partridge a white and a blue. I just want to clarify I have pure colors, not just variations of colors. :)
LOL Love your Avatar! My husband says his Maria loves it too. He sits on the floor with his back up against the couch. She'll sit on the couch with her neck hanging over his shoulder and watch the computer screen while he's cruising around on the net! They have quite the conversation!

Ideal has none available and McMurray has a minimum order of 25 and I'm looking for about 6...
Yeah! That's the problem ordering from McMurray. Tractor Supply in our area is a 6 limit buy and Farmers Coporation is buy what you want.

There's also the Hatchery close to us too. I don't know if he mails out though!

I went on Meyer Hatchery last night to order 4 white silkies but I accidentally fell asleep, went to log back on tonight and they are completely sold out of every silkie.... UGH. that's why I'm considering eggs now.

Here's little Maria sitting on her covered ice pack on the couch underneath her pink baby blanket! She has no clue what a real chickens life living outside is about! She gets her outside time, but when she's done and ready to come in? She walks up to my feet and stands there looking up at me. "Pick me up mom. I'm ready to go to the couch now!"

Sounds like she has the same spoiled life style my very first silkie had when I was younger lol. He was a rooster and I spoiled him like my child lol.

I'm sorry, I have to ask. Why is she on an ice pack ?

Im excited for tomorrow. We are going to pick up my chickies a nice big run. Its going to be their sheltered run to keep them dry & safe and then I hope to make room for another turn out area where they can play in the sun when they are being monitored. I can set there run into two different sizes and I am wondering which you guys think is better? I can make it 6ftx22ft long, or 12ftx16ft long. Maybe its a be a dumb question, but im having a hard time deciding which is better? The length or width for a silkie coop? If I make it longer then I would have a wider turn out space in front of it, and if I make it wider it would look nicer in this spot but might not leave much of a turn out space. Im going to cover the top with a weather proof tarp and then fill it with sand. Just trying to decide how to set the run up lol.

Why is Maria sitting on an ice pack?

Sylvester: No hard feelings on my end! I didn't take anything negative from your post! Sorry about the confusion on that! I come off sounding way harsher than I am! I guess after 23 years in the Army that does it to a person! Sorry!

Heres a true funny story for ya! When I was around five yrs old I went out to the yard. My parents had a momma hen in this small wire cage sitting in the grass. The babies were on the outside of it. I walked up, picked one up and not knowing it at the time? The gate wasn't latched shut. Oh My! She come out of there flocking the heck out me. From that point on I was deathly afraid of chickens! LOL

Fast forward to 1999! My XH and I moved from WI back to AR. He decided to get Mallard Ducks, Wood Ducks and one other kind! My younger sister decided she wanted some baby chickens around that time to. Well after a month of dealing with them, she didn't want them anymore. So Yep! I ended up with them. Can't say I was thrilled about it considering my past history with them! I went to the feed store a week later and saw these little white cottonballs running around inside this pen of baby chicks. I asked what they were and was told Chinese Silkies! Well those little darlings came home with me. Along with one other breed that kept throwing itself at the wire and peeping it's head off. Take me! Take me! So that's how I got into raising chickens!

I don't show them. They are strictly pets and give us eggs. I have a wonderful Vet that I can take them too when I need to also. She cares about them and does the above and beyond thing to help me get them better.

I had Araucanas(sp) one time. There is the off breed called Americaunas too. A true blooded Araucana is a high dollar chicken to obtain.

Yes, sometimes difficult to word it in writing what we're trying to say.

BTW - Thank you for your service to our Country!

Ahhh - having that special vet - I can identify! Dogs/cats have mostly taken over our vet's practice but he does exotics/birds as well. It's rare for him to see a chicken and loves when we bring in a Silkie for a visit. He has been spot-right-on with all his diagnosis and feel so lucky to have him just 10 minutes away. It's a relief not to have to be miles from civilization to have to treat your own birds and still not know if you've diagnosed the problem correctly. I've been wrong every time I thought I knew what was wrong with my Silkie and the vet set me straight. So thankful for him. Now if a hen is not better by next day it's off to the vet. I'm not qualified to guess-timate what's wrong with my bird and then stress her treating her for the wrong thing.

What was the breed that kept throwing itself at you? Sometimes pets pick us and not the other way around lol. Ducks are really cute. Folks had them on the farm. I don't have room for them now in our city backyard.

I had two APA Ameraucana juvies shipped to me but the poor things had lice and worms. Who'd think a breeder would do that? Anyway we lost one of the sister pullets but managed to save the other and she's a hoot! I came close to getting an Araucana but after seeing my friend's Ameraucana and 3 EEs I decided I liked these talkative friendly girls. I know the Araucanas are a sweet gentle breed also but we get such huge blue eggs from the Ameraucana plus her kooky quirky friendly personality is not threatening to our 2 Silkies. She is easy to pet or pick up, she's a vigilant barnyard watchman, she's not interested in flock politics, not broody, she chases stray cats out of the yard, and she loves to carry on conversations when you talk to her or pet her. Never had another breed like that before. All our chickens are friendly and eat out of our hand and let us pick them up but she seems to actually crave the company of either us or the other hens. After having to re-home a combative Marans and White Leghorn we are thoroughly happy to have her temperament in the flock. The only drawback is she doesn't know the strength of her own voice and can cackle quite loudly - small negative for such a good-natured hen.

So glad you found the joys of Silkie ownership. We plan all additions to our flock with the Silkies' compatibility in mind. Therefore we only keep gentle breeds and under 5-lb. After the 7-lb Marans attacked our 2-lb Silkie the bully was instantly re-homed and we don't get heavy LF any more. I like LF - just not around our little Silkies. Silkies are savvy and hardy for a bantam but not an equal match against a heavy LF in flock politics.

Have a good holiday!

Too cute.

All our hens want to use the same nestbox to lay their egg. We have one Black Silkie that gets tired of standing in line to use the nestbox so she comes to the back sliding door squawking to let her in so she can go to the indoor hospital pen to lay her egg. As soon as she lays her egg she goes to the back door squawking to let her out again. Spoiled? Hmmm - maybe?
