Welcome to the fluffy side!!!!

I have one that started to lay at a little before 5 months and is already broody and is not even six months!!! She is my earliest silkie layer and she is the one that fooled me into thinking she was a sweet little boy!!! Hence, how she got the name Charlie! LOL I am still waiting on 7 month olds to start laying too.
I agree, the more youngsters you see, the better you will get at guessing their sex, but you always have that one or two that fool you!!!

Thank you! I don't mind being fooled. I've been fooled with the Marans too. Just had my pretty Myrtle, become my handsome Myron!

Seems like the different lines give more tell tale signs than others, and some lines lay earlier than others. Hunt and peck, so I'll just read on and learn.

LOL!!!! my bf would so kill me if I said "look honey, now we can have your ducks in the house thanks to the duck diaper!"

Oh, my... she found them !!!! Even had a friend over and hear all the giggles, coos in the bedroom... pop in and they are picking out colors!!!! Now she is going to want matching diapers.
I told her where we live... we don't need them... she is determined and will use her own money... HELPPPPPP!!!!!

Back to the real topic on hand

being new to silkies (owning my own chickens too on that matter).... We have a couple that are very skittish and some that come right up to you and are almost under foot like a dog.
Is it typical of this breed like some other breeds that the rooster are friendlier at a young age and the pullets are more skittish?

Another question to those of you who breed...
I am hoping to add a few splash or partridge to the flock next year.
There seems to be soo many problems with shipping eggs... would it be wiser to find someone with day old and ship live chicks?
Is there anyone in West Tennessee that has nice silkies (I could pick-up)?

I know... she is a nut... but I love her... She was trying to keep a BSL in the house as a pet... glad she is leaning towards Silkies.. BSL are big!!!
Worried about this shoe thing!!! I sew, so I can do the diapers, but I am NOT... repeat NOT making chicken shoes. AND>>>> if it is in the house... why does it need shoes?
I would probably laugh so hard... it would kill me.

I lost one of my Calico roosters lastnight

I don't know what got him I think it was a raccoon. It pulled him through his pen and ate one leg and his head feathers everywhere. My question is why was he in his pen and not inside they always go inside. I have delt with this problem for three years now and have set traps built better pens I am so aggervated I feel like giving up. It's like I have a penned buffet for this thing and am paying $$ to feed whatever it is.

We cured the that problem after losing our whole flock of egg layers in one night to family of those bad boys. We bought a 6 foot high roll chain link fence and laid in 3 feet in and 3 feet out all around the whole area and buried it 6 inches, they have not dug under again. We have a top on so that is secure. Our Silkies are locked in at night. We also did this to the two entrances to the barn and all around the barn......we can sleep now without worry. Sorry for your loss.
