How long do we need quarantine for?

I always quarantine no less than 30 days, that is my preference. Some people only wait 2weeks I don't think its long enough.

what kind of set up do I need? I dont have an extra coop or anything, I do have a large dog crate that could fit 2-3 plus water/food. could prob scramble up some kind of fencing for them to forage during the day. My others are free ranged.

That sounds like it would work. You need to set the quarantined chickens up as far away from you existing flock of chickens as possible.

I quarantine either in my garage in a built in wall unit my DH built me and do not open the garage door at all during quarantine. The other option for me is on the opposite side of my house that is far from my other animals I set up a rabbit hutch with wire fencing surrounding it. I have also used large dog crates.

Any set up will really do fine the main thing is just keeping away from each other. Also tend to your quarantined birds last in the morning and lock up last at night. I also don't use the same shoes and wash my hands after tending to the quarantined.

Okay. good. It;s going to be tricky to keep them away. I know the others will be investigating the newcomers. Since others are free ranged nw way to keep others away, really. They will be going up and investigating through the fence.

My paint eggs hatched....................

So CUTE!!

Do you ever vaccinate? I am thinking about vaccinating but its so confusing.

Hi! I'm introducing myself here because tonight we are getting our first silkies! I already have about 30 layers, so I'm not completely new to chickens, but these will be our first "pet" breed, the first kind of chicken that isn't your basic hardy full sized farm bird. :) They are actually my son's, who wanted a bird we would promised not to cull or eat, etc. LOL Is there anything we really ought to know about Silkies that might not be the same as our other birds? Thank you!

Silkies are a wonderful choice for children. The main things that come to mind are ,keep the perches low ( silkies don't fly ) and be sure to provide plenty of cover as they don't fair well if they get drenched by the rain. :)

That's a really good idea lol some poor sellers are losing $$ as we speak :gig I plan to hatch through the winter. My husband says I have a problem too but luckily for me he's completely supportive and enables my 'problem'. He says he'd rather have me obsessing over eggs and pampering a billion birds than hanging out in bars or anything like that in my spare time. I like his logic :D

I keep telling my boyfriend that they take a lot less time and are a helluva lot cheaper than horses.
