Silkie thread!

Too cute not to share. (S)he is just fascinated by my watch.

This Silkie will be buff, right? The wing feathers have some darker brown in them, but I've never had a Silkie before, so I don't know if this is normal.

Adorable, this would be a great pic for the ' what's this chicken thinking ' thread. Tic toc, would be a great name. :)

these ladies are lovely! I have a very excited 7 year old who has special requsted to keep best friend silkies. I am looking for 2 pullets. she has seen the brown and silver mix and the grey with black but I don't think she is very picky as long as they are fluffy. any idea where I can find nice show quality silkies? (4h)
thank yous

Sorry, I know this isn't a duck thread, but This little duckling is having a lot of trouble getting out. Should I help him? It's been trying since early last night. His beak, foot, and one wing are out but it's almost like it hasn't zipped

I couldn't bear to watch him, so I helped him. The membrane (I think that's what it was) was really tough, so that may be why he had trouble. It was defiantly ready to come out. Poor thing, tho. I think it's head is cramped from the position it was in.

Can anyone explain the color "blue"? I have been told some black with gray are blue and that white with gray are blue. I do not want to advertise blue if that is not true. I'm very confused. The only one I'm sure about is the partridge.

Did you hatch them from your own flock or buy them from elsewhere? Knowing their genetic make up is the first step to understanding what you have. There is phenotype (what it looks like) and genotype (what the genetics are) Those two things do not always jive.

I found this chart on google search. This is how you breed to get blue silkies. See what I mean if you know what parentage your chicks are you can figure out if your chicks are indeed going to be blue, splash, or black. Blues can be very dark and very light, and somewhere in between.

Yes chip off the egg without pealing the membrane so the top half and bitten half of the shell are no longer connected. Start there. If the membrane is dry wet it with a qtip

Thanks, @TiaRC.
I chipped off the shell around the pip hole—but I also peeled the membrane. I think it was super thick so that's why the duck was having trouble.
It was a little cramped afterward, but is doing fine now. Its umbilical cord was hanging out, and so was a little organ-looking thing.
We put colloidal silver gel on it and it looks better now. We have it in a bucket under the heat lamp by the brooder.

Some birds that appear black are lighter coloured close to the skin, that means it is a blue. Looking at the pic I'd say partridge , white and porcelain . They are gorgeous btw.
