Silkie thread!

moved the barred out into another temp brooder.
WOW what a difference it made went from a Rock N Roll concert to a classical music cd experience. the Barred are still enjoying the rock n roll but the ladies I ordered are much more relaxed and my little Bear is safely eating and drinking in the calm chick brooder

That was great advice!

hello all,
i just got my first Silkie chicks last week. i have a problem with my blue silkie Bear. Bear is 9 days old and tonite i found her on her side being trampled by the filler roosters that were shipped with my order. she is wobbly and shaking her head once every so often she opens her mouth and streaches her neck. can anyone tell if there is a chance to save her or what might be going on?
this is my Bear

please help me keep her.
thanks for any ideas jo

Since your chick has been trampled I would treat for shock and trauma. It's not sick. If you haven't already, separate it from the others and keep it warm. The electrolytes are a great idea for trauma. Try to keep from over handling. Just quiet and warmth. I use old aquariums for hospital brooders for silkie chicks. They keep out drafts and keep the warm in. They can be draped with a tea towel for added darkness too. Use a thermometer so it doesn't get too warm. Your chick has a 50/50 chance of recovery at this point. If you can put another silkie chick with it that won't further molest the hurt one all the better. That way when they are reintroduced in a few days they will be brooder buddies.

Sorry I missed this post before answering. Wonderful news. Happy to see the chick recovered.

That sounds Great I have an old 10 gallon is that big enough? I stayed up all night with her I put her on a heating pad with towels to keep out drafts and making sure she drank electro water and ate some she just kept trying to get in my hand. I put her back in the garden tub with only the 8 bannies and 4 standard cochin. no one is picking now they are all glad the Barred are gone. I should have dispatched the packing peanuts right away but my family is not as heartless as I am.

Lesson learned I just hope it isnt a stupid hard lesson.

Good news I hope for the Packing Peanuts ...
My oldest daughter has friends with children in 4h looking for roos she is going to check with them to see if they can be placed through out the group.

should I still put her in the aquarium it will fit in the tub with the others so they could see but not touch.

Overcrowding can be very harmful to chicks. Heat is the main requirement for chicks so young. Be careful not to overheat, always have an area big enough for them to move away from the heat in the event of it getting too hot. If they are panting , it is to hot and if they are huddling , it is too cold. Hydration is also very important , dehydrated chicks get pasty butt. Always change the water daily because it warms up too if your brooder area is too small.
When buying silkie chicks I would recommend getting a few , that way they will bond together as the larger breeds outgrow them. This link will help you with your heating timetable.

Hello all! I'm not new to chickens but I am new to BYC! I just love the Silkies. I only have a few right now but want to add more. I'm bidding on these Chocolate Silkie eggs that are for auction on here. I'm hoping I win :) I only have White right now so I think these would be pretty cool lol
