Silkie thread!

Depending on the medication, it's not a good idea to feed medicated feed if you are still collecting eggs for consumption. Once the hen is raising chicks it's ok for her to eat it as she won't start laying again for a few months.
A good quality pellet should have all of the essential vitamins and amino acids in it.

Its the medication that is made up of vitamins and minerals not actual antibiotics, starts with an a... can't remember the word.

Amprolium, and all it is is a thiamine blocker for helping with Cocci overload... better off with Corid for that anyways...

But, it *does* have a withdrawal period for eating the eggs...

i put 4 pretty large eggs and one bantam egg under my self blue silkie. it seemed like a lot for her. she is super small. one died at birth and two had crooked feet. i managed to repair one of them but the rooster never would keep the bandaids on and they did not repair. it COULD have been caused by uneven temps....etc so i would go easy on her if she is really small. i don't think it was genetic as the breeder said never had that in her flock. but you never know just thought i would share....the one that mended you would never know! and luckily that was the Hen! my silkies and marans due to hatch wed/thursday.....

As far as I know amprolium has no withholding period. :)

Oops, thought it did...

But it's not a vitamin or mineral supplement, I do know that... and giving vites at the same time counteracts it's effectiveness... I just see no use for medicated chick feed... doesn't ensure proper dose of Amprolium for Cocci even... :)

I'm with you on that. I don't feed medicated feed anymore. If I have an outbreak , then I treat with amprolium / corid. :)

Corrid IS amprolium! and i THINK but won't swear to the fact it should have a 2 week withdrawal before eating eggs? anyone else know about that? i have used and pretty sure the vet said not to eat the eggs for 2 weeks.

i was told by the local chicken guy at a feed store that it was good to feed hatchery chicks medicated feed. HE said it gives them a step up. they are already tossed around, then mailed, dehydrated and hungry and if they get cocci it kills them fast. with the medicated feed they build an immunity slowly. i don't give it to my chicks who are raised by a broody hen and out in the yard with all the birds, but if i am raising in a brooder box or have hatchery birds i do...thats just what i feel good about. i usually just let the hens do the work now and also since they are all raised together i can't separate feeding so i have to get unmedicated anyway...
