Silkie thread!

I'm new to Silkies, I have 2 white silkies that are 4 weeks old. They are being raised with 3 Barred Rocks and seem to all be doing great together. I'm hoping to introduce them to my 4 Buff Orpingtons and 6 Black Australorps this summer. So far they are so cute and I love the fluff!
You will love the little fluff balls mine have been so calm co and collected for most part raised two for about 4mo and we're roos so had to sell them and now on my third one and afraid a he and at 7weeks the biggest cry baby I have had so far lol but just because he plays so hard during the day and can't settle down to sleep lol but have fun I sure do enjoy the breed.

Silkies are so fluffing cute. Only one of my silkies which was a roo was ever mean (he was killed by a fox last night, rip big red) The other you could pick up and carry Around with you like a Pokemon. Grats on the new additions!

Hi. I really want to have a silkie in my new flock. The run space is 30sqr feet. So should I get 2 faverolles and squeeze 2 silkies in there as well or try 2 faverolles and 1 silkie. ? Hope u can help

Thanks for the reply! When I saw the chart @Fancychooklady posted i was so hoping to find mine on there, but no such luck. Whatever their genetic makeup is they are adorable. I don't think I will have any trouble finding homes for them.

White is unpredictable , meaning that the chicks could hatch being a combination of the parents or plain white. Even the chicks that are splash or blue may throw pure white chicks in the future. :)

I've got a question about the fibromelonosis gene.

I'm wanting to express more of the blue ear lobes, and that only seems to come from silkies that carry that gene, mainly in white, black, blue and partridge.

If I'm wanting to bring out more of that gene... crossing these colors 'should' work???  It's been so long since I've dealt with genetics, I'm terribly rusty.  Anyone on this thread yet that knows about the fibromelonosis genes?

Thanks!
Sue

It's my understanding that the fm gene is what causes the inheritance of the dark skin phenotype in silkies. I'm not sure that feather colour / pattern would dictate the degree of intensity of blue in lobes.

If they aren't bearded , wattles are far more visible. Some pics would help . :) . Red combs are not a desirable trait for showing , but do pop up in the breed .

Yes you are bound to run into Roos unfortunately. I ended up with 50/50 even Roos and hens. 3 of my Roos that didn't play nice in the coop with the girls got the boot. Now they are free range during the day annoying the neighbors :p

Here are some pictures of Frankie. You can't see the "pinking" in the comb, due to phone camera quality, but it's on the tips.

His comb looks rather dark in the pic and remember that the desired colour is ' mulberry ' not black.
However he has a star comb , the standard requires a walnut comb. :(

I'm not raising them for showing, so I'm not concerned about their looks :) For instance, a lot of them don't have much feathering on their legs, Frankie doesn't have any at all. I know these factors could lower my chances of rehoming any boys, but it's just something I'll have to deal with I guess...
