I live in East Texas, from Hurst until a couple of years ago. I have 5 silkies in with my regular chickens (Rhode Island Reds, Wyndottes, Barred Rocks) and have no problem. Inly thing I notice is that the Silkies wont get on the high roost with the big girls so put s lower roost in the opposite corner for them. They do use the same nesting boxes though. So we just set up our first coop! Going to look at chickens next week. I want to know some opinions on putting 2 silkies in with chickens. I've read they can be mixed. I live in DFW Texas,so cold shouldn't be an issue but maybe 2 weeks a year.
This is why I was very picky about the chickens I got, not only did I want friendly hens that would also double as good pets (picking less effective layers over Barred rocks and Rhode Island Reds because they are skittish) but also chickens who were often described as being the ones commonly picked on or at the bottom of the pecking order. It might also help that all my roosters are silkies as well though I don't think my silkies will be able to breed with the bigger hens.
As the others have said, it is hard to tell because colors can change quite a bit as real feathers come in. I will tell you I have one that looked a lot like your as a baby. Not quite as light but very similar pattern. Not sure about my chick's parent's colors since I ordered those eggs but I had paints, blues and blacks hatch from same batch. She was born mostly black with a little lighter color on her underside and white wingtips and legs. She grew up to be an ordinary solid black. Who knows about your? It will be fun to see where she ends up.
