Is there a way to get my silkie boys to crow less? I use no-crow collars, but they still manage to be loud. Any tips that don't involve eating or otherwise removing them from me would be greatly appreciated.
I actually had a boy that DIDN'T crow, but he passed on, so I have two screechy boys to worry about.
@RubyNala97 is in NY, breeds Paint and is NPIP... she's not on BYC much anymore, but has a FB page... I can look it up later if you'd like... she has great stock and is wonderful to deal with...
Thanks!!!!!! You don't know how much this means to me!!!When cockerels start to crow they never seem to stop until they get older. Keep them in a darkened garage at night so they don't disturb you or the neighbors at 1:00 or 2:00 or 4:00 a.m. During the day you and/or your neighbors will have to cope with their screechy crowing. I had to re-home my sweet Partridge boy because he mounted his sister way too much and crowed way too much and I'm not zoned for roos. Velcro Crow Collars or Velcro Chicken Diapers don't work well on Silkie fluffy "hair" and seems to pull out feathers so I stopped using Velcro around Silkies. For chicken diapers in-house to use on recuperating birds I make my own diapers without Velcro.
Any advice on when to give a broody that you aren't allowing to actually sit eggs a couple of chicks.
She is young, about 7 months, laid a hand full of eggs and went broody.Seems determined even when I'm taking the eggs daily from where the other hens will lay in her area. She will still sit there on nothing.
So... how long should I let her keep at it before getting 2/3 chicks for her, and what are the chances of a young first time silkie of accepting? Do the chicks have to be fresh hatched, under a week... guidelines please.
Help appreciated.
I've let plenty of hens sit in the past but don't have experience with getting them to adopt.
*edit- darn phone wants to autocorrect broody.. to bloody every time. Lol
Thanks!!!!!! You don't know how much this means to me!!!
