I don't know how the heck I saw three weeks, but I did.

There was no reason for this little D not to be able to maintain body heat just as it sibs did but evidently it was a problem for it. I would find it hunkered under the light while the others were out free ranging, then it would come out for a while, then go back to the light. Its fine now, a bit smaller than the others but healthy other wise.

I am going to put a towel over & around the pen, except for one side, & see if that makes a difference. Otherwise, it shows no signs of illness, or anything. Its a mystery.

I'm just guessing here but maybe that one is just super timid? I've noticed some of my younger chicks doing similar behavior when I'm around because they are scared of the giant beast aka me lol Just the age I guess. I also notice the ones that turn out to be girls are usually the ones ducking and hiding. Idk probably just a coincidence really.

What your night time temps like? Just consider this: Start at 95 degree in a brooder for temperature with brand new chicks. Every week subtract 5 degrees. At five weeks that means 70 degrees, if it's 70 degrees outside at night or warmer they should be fine. Here mine go outside by themselves at 5-6 weeks depending on the temps and do just fine. They huddle together at night to stay warm. If you hear them kicking up a fit chirping loudly take that as a clue they might be cold.

Thanks Colie, it's in the low 70's here at night, so they should be ok. :)

Thank you so much Colie!!!! Yea it's turning out that the people we got the eggs from seem to be amateurs. Nothing wrong with that, just finding out that alot of their information isn't correct. Happy to hear that. Had 2 more this morning!!!! Only checked one and that one has 4 toes as well. Can't have any roosters, so hoping there is at least 2 girls in the mix. But there's also 4 more eggs under her.

I love my silkies boys, I'm sorry you can't have a rooster. Is it because of the ordinance where you live? I live in the city and I'm allowed to have 4 roosters but the inspector lets me slide *knock on wood* with a few more as long as I keep the noise down. (I put my super noisy boys in little dog kennels at night in my garage). Mother nature would say that you'll get 50/50 boys versus girls so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! You're right though, nothing wrong with amateurs. We all start somewhere and shoot I'm still an amateur

I don't really like when people pass on totally incorrect information though. I figure why not research what your saying first or at least admit you may be wrong when doling it out? Oh well... Good luck with your fluffins!

I have a gorgeous, fluffy, typey black pullet. Naturally she has 4 toes on one foot.

I have noticed with this batch of chicks that some consistently run and hide when I put my hand in and some keep their eyes on my hand and run backwards and even bravely peck at me. I'm betting they will be cockerels! What do you think?
