Silkie thread!

If I didn't have this same thing happen here this Summer I wouldn't even think about it. I had a d'Uccle chick start the same thing. I had decided not to do a lot but I did hang a light for warmth. Turns out the chick was cold and for whatever reason needed that little bit of help. The chick was part of a group hatched at the same time and were a couple of weeks old. Its now getting in to all kinds of trouble just like its sibs.

This chick is at least 2 months old,my oldest Silkie, & fully feathered, inside the barn. Although it has gotten cooler here lately, I can't imagine its cold....but I suppose its possible. I did take another chick out of that pen, so maybe that one less body makes a difference? Although its pen is wire on all sides & top theres no place to huddle.

Do Silkies take longer than other birds to be able to maintain their own body heat? Its been unusually hot for weeks here, until the last week.
My other younger silkie chicks are fine.

I don't know how the heck I saw three weeks, but I did.

There was no reason for this little D not to be able to maintain body heat just as it sibs did but evidently it was a problem for it. I would find it hunkered under the light while the others were out free ranging, then it would come out for a while, then go back to the light. Its fine now, a bit smaller than the others but healthy other wise.

I am going to put a towel over & around the pen, except for one side, & see if that makes a difference. Otherwise, it shows no signs of illness, or anything. Its a mystery.

Sue,

Is there any chance it is getting picked on? I have one little bossy Silkie that will randomly pick on the others. I heard this one chirping one day and went out to look. Here was the one bad boy?, pecking the other on the head. The funny part was, the one get picked on was trying to hide under the one that was picking on it! Trouble maker removed, problem solved. Mine are all 7 weeks and don't seem to have any problems with the temps, either in the heat of the day, or the cooler nights.

I have a silkie with the squirts. She stayed in the chicken house all yesterday. Wonder what's wrong w/ her? She's just not acting right

Hi,

I have my very first Silkie chicks which are almost five weeks old. They are still sleeping under mom, but I would like to see mom start laying again. Are they old enough to be by themselves at night without a brood light? It's hard to tell with them because I can't tell if they're "feathered out" . LOL Plus, mom is dropping hints that she is ready to give them up, though she is still really loving with them, they don't get preference at the food bowl anymore.

Thanks,

In the picture he looks black. He's awesome looking btw! If you are seeing lighter colored under fluff around his bottom though I'd venture to say he's a very dark blue. Cross him with a black girl and if you get blues and blacks hatching you'll know he's really a blue! lol

How old is he? That's good so far you aren't seeing any leakage, it drives me nuts when my boys are showing it even before 6 months!

Thank you so much Colie!!!! Yea it's turning out that the people we got the eggs from seem to be amateurs. Nothing wrong with that, just finding out that alot of their information isn't correct. Happy to hear that. Had 2 more this morning!!!! Only checked one and that one has 4 toes as well. Can't have any roosters, so hoping there is at least 2 girls in the mix. But there's also 4 more eggs under her.

I love my silkies boys, I'm sorry you can't have a rooster. Is it because of the ordinance where you live? I live in the city and I'm allowed to have 4 roosters but the inspector lets me slide *knock on wood* with a few more as long as I keep the noise down. (I put my super noisy boys in little dog kennels at night in my garage). Mother nature would say that you'll get 50/50 boys versus girls so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! You're right though, nothing wrong with amateurs. We all start somewhere and shoot I'm still an amateur

I don't really like when people pass on totally incorrect information though. I figure why not research what your saying first or at least admit you may be wrong when doling it out? Oh well... Good luck with your fluffins!
