Silkie thread!

Oh my god, I really hope she doesn't have gapeworms :( I bought her a couple of weeks ago and did not notice anything until I introduced her to my flock. I will remove her tomorrow and see if the symptoms continue. What treatment should administrate?
you can go ahead and use one of the dewormers posted here

"Probably where ever you read this Gapes were misdiagnosed, as it is 99% of the time, Chicken yawns or coughs for whatever reason and automaticaly has gapes, Chicken is givin whatever and cured, Levamisole.Albendazole.Fenbendazole and Ivermectin will control gapes if caught in time. Levamisole is in the bloodstream quicker than the others, With either of these four it has to be in the bloodstream long and high enough to be effective.."
"Im not understanding the 10 days apart, when infact it should be 3 times in ten days..Gapeworms will sence the chemical in the blood, stop feeding for a day or two till the blood levels decrease-hence the 3 times in ten days..That is if a bird already showing symptoms of Gapes will even last ten more days..Gapeworms are hard to treat with any wormer, You have to hit them hard and quick"

but honestly I think it's just stressed. Treat her for the week and see how she is. Also after the treatment is all done make sure to give probiotics to re-regulate her GI tract.
I have had this happen with every one of my birds, they get put in a stressful situation and start "yawning" and shaking their heads. Once settled down again they stop. It has happened a lot less with Ice because she is very outgoing and not much stresses her out.

When you get close to coming to town PM me and maybe we can meet up for a short chat.
Hey Trav! Are you back from Hawaii?!

I'll ask the DH when we get down that way and see what the plans are.

Has anyone ever heard of silkie swallowing air. I think it has been discussed but i cannot find it. Is it bad? She also shakes her head but I think it's because she doesn't see much.
I didn't mean to scare you by mentioning gapeworm. I thought you were asking for the name of what has been discussed in the past. I'm sorry to have worried you. :-(
I am wanting to buy silkie hatching eggs in a larger quantity any suggestions? They don't have to be from show quality but I deff don't want hatchery quality either!
You may be able to contact the breeders who list eggs for sale here on Backyard Chickens and ask about purchasing the quantity you desire. Sometimes you can work together with a breeder. You could also post something on your local Craigslist and may find someone near you.
Day 4. We have life! A couple look infertile, but quite a few have 'spiders' in them. Really hoping the father of at least some of these is Macho. Yes, my 'candler' is my galaxy s3's LED light

I think the mother of most of these eggs is this girl (not macho!), the one in the back with the cute bonnet crest. She's the one who's always in the nest box, and who has the loosest looking vent.
I still can't get over the amazing heart shape of your bird.

1) Realize that silkies originate from one of the coldest places on earth!  If fully feathered and healthy, and allowed to acclimate to the climate, they are probably far heartier in cod weather than your LF egglayers.

2) Gapeworm was my first thought.

After all our experiences this past year, my special needs daughter would be heartbroken if any silkies were to die. We had "warm" weather in the 40's and even a high at 51 degrees...but then the temps plummeted. In a matter of 2 days we had nearly a 40 degree drop in temperature. My body didn't have time to acclimate to the bitter cold, let alone the silkies. LOL

Our pullets in the coop go under the heat lamp whenever they desire. I haven't seen the boys under it yet.  I feel better knowing they have the ability to moderate their own temps. It's kind of like people who go ice skating or skiing in cold weather.  When their cheeks start freezing or they can't feel their hands anymore...they take a break and go sit by the fire for a few minutes to warm up.

I compare our LF egglayers to our black lab, who loved to be outside in all sorts of weather, getting wet and having fun. In contrast, the silkies seem more like our poodle who didn't want to go out in any cold or wet weather at all. My gut tells me that our cockerels can handle the cold with their larger body mass... but I don't feel our pullets are cold hardy when it is freezing.

Thank you. I will keep that in mind. I am going to the feed store today, so I will buy whichever they have there.

Oh no Tina, don't worry. I am actually happy you mentioned gapeworm because I had no idea about those. I went and check on her this morning and she seems fine to me. I will wait and keep on eye on her. But anyway thank you very much for schooling me on worms lol.

Well, we are getting torrential rains here in the desert.. Kent & karen our once beautiful silkies are like
wet "puppy"chick's..
Us humans love this rain... Not the chicks so much... Silkies look so funny wet...
I bet all they are thinking is "cant wait for my dusting bath"

We have the opposite with our Silkies - they LOVE being out in the rain. Our LF doesnt mind the rain but they do take shelter a lot more than our Silkies. It rained here yesterday and our Silkies are still drying their crests! Thankfully it's warm and sunny today. :)
