Sounds like the crouching she does when you go to pet her is not a crouch a hen does when they lay an egg. Does she also spread her wings out a little bit? I do believe that's one of those sumbissive/scared crouches. Someone who knows better, please correct me!I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I thought I would give it a shot. I have a silkie who is almost 6 months old. In november I thought she did the squat for me, so i waited and waited for her to lay an egg. Needless to say, she has yet to lay an egg but she keeps doing this thing when I try to pet her that is more like a crouch. She gets as low to the ground as possible, even if I gently touch her back. Has anyone else had this happen? She is really friendly and will come up at "talk" to me when I am out there and she lets me hold her, but this crouch thing is just a little different than the way my other girls act. Thanks for any advice.

I think we all want to trust the judge's judgement. That's what they're there for. But sometimes, they're not always right. They're only humans too. lolI want to trust the judge's judgement, and would rather just ask them their reasoning but I haven't been able to find them.
Good luck with the hatching! You'll have all kinds of fun with the chicks.Hi all, I am new to this thread, & still pretty new to BYC, just discovered it this month. I am on day 21 with 6 silkie eggs, 1 pipped so far- I've been enjoying seeing the pics of all the ones on here![]()
thanks! Ok, I will go check on her this morning. She went broody plenty of times this summer. I didn't try to touch her last night, I didn't think of it. I ALMOST looked to see if she had an egg under her but I didn'tYou have plenty of time to make sure she is really broody and yes she could be having an egg laying problem given the thin shelled eggs you've had, so I would keep a close eye on her in case she has an internal broken egg. I sure hope that is not it. If she goes totally broody she will fluff her feathers and sound mean if you touch her.
Sure a beautful set up!!
lovely coop...do your silkies really walk up and down that ramp? amazing...I think i baby mine too much...lol

Beautiful photos! Love those colors!!
About the only thing I look for at this age is foot feathering and toe count/spacing. Looks like you've got lots of foot feathering there!I just wanted to share...I had my first 2 "homegrown" silkie chicks hatch today. One is a showgirl, the other is not.
I know that not too much can be seen at this age - but do they look like nice quality chicks?
And here is the hen...don't mind the cheese on the floor...LOL
I have 6 more eggs cooking in my incubator - they're due in about 12 days. I had to stagger my hatch, the hen is laying intermittently and I didn't want to waste them!
