I just use a 75 or 100 watt house bulb for my reptiles, will work just as well for the babies at least during the day. At night though you would probably want a red or purple night bulb or a ceramic heat emitter so I would invest in one of those. The ceramic is great because it radiates heat but doesn't give off light so the babies can sleep at night.

I always use a red bulb as it is 'softer' at night and they can sleep...a purple night bulb would prob. be better...I had heard that a white light can cause them to fight? don't know if it is true or not...I have a250watt bulb in at first which is high above the brooder (because that was all I had) then i change it to a 100 watt and move it closer...the 250 is really too hot and I find that the 100 was too cool for the chicks after hatch...
Day 10 candling went well. All ten eggs are developing right on schedule, and boy, are they active! I don't think they liked being taken out of the nice warm incubator too much, they were basically bouncing all around the shell. Sweet babies
I'm so happy (and surprised) with the 100% fertility! Little Macho (or "The Other Guy") have apparently been quite active! Now I just am hoping for a 100% hatch as well
I turned the heat light on in the brooder tonight so i can make sure its in the right spot before i get the chicks in the morning and both dogs were sitting there staring into it and expecting more chicks. lol.
My pit is terrified of chicks...she pees on the floor anytime one moves near her and my shepard mix is confused by them. haha
Here are my Wife's Silkies at around 9 weeks(+/- a week). Please excuse the messy faces, they love their fermented feed.
Buff(Teriyaki)
Porcelain(Marsala)
White(Parmesano)
Black(Kung Pow)
Blue(General Tso)
A couple of weeks ago I thought the Black one was a cockerel, now I am questioning it. Only the Blue is getting much bigger and has a large comb, the other four have very small combs. If Blue ends up being the only cockerel, that means I only need to acquire one more cockerel, a Buff or Partridge to go with the Buff and Porcelain girls.
I start with a 100 watt house bulb, switch to 60 in two weeks and turn the light out at 4 weeks. They stay indoors until 6 weeks. The distance they are from the light is critical. They need room to get fairly close and move away. If they stay too far from the light it's too close. If the lay right under it, it's too far away.
Thought I'd share this as well. My hen Tina is on broody duty!!! Chicks hatching in the bator, hens going broody, its chick fever around here! Its been cold, so I think once the chicks dry off (of which there are 3 now ), I'll give them to her. It'll save her from sitting and me from brooding them in the house. Win-win. Now she takes them! I don't think it'll be a problem though, she's a pretty mellow girl.
