Silkie thread!

anyone know if my silkie's crest might get bigger after the first molt? She comes from good lines and the other two I got look fabulous, (one died though)... I think it is weird that her crest is so small. or does that just happen sometimes even with good lines?
How old is your silkie? Could we see a picture?
Sometimes, even the birds from the best breeders with best lines, don't always turn out the best. It happens occasionally.

It's -27F here with wind chill. -2F without. So cold.
Dang!! I've been bitching and moaning all morning, came indoors to put more layers on but I don't feel so bad anymore. It's 20F-something here in Connecticut. It feels much colder, I think. But your temperatures are definitely worse. Spring is only 40 days away!!!

We have a countdown each year.

Sharing a few pics I took today while I was hanging out with the puff balls. Enjoy

^broody Tina. I imagine if you could actually see her eyes this look would be super stinky. She's very grumpy right now!!!

I love close ups!
Great eye-liner! What a cutie!
Hi Guys,
I am very new to the world of Silkies and I am still trying to figure out some of the colors. I bought this cutie from a friend who hatched some eggs from a quality breeder. I cannot tell if this one is a buff or maybe porcelain?? I would really appreciate any thoughts you more experienced Silkie Lovers have. Thanks in advance!
Nice buff!
Hello, I'm new to silkies so please forgive me if I sound silly. I have noticed that some have large puffs on their heads while others are much smaller and don't cover the eyes. Are those different types of silkies? Also I'm from central NJ and would like to know where I could get some nice ones that are not hatchery. I've been researching here and have read about s- shapes, balance between head and body, tight wings, feathered feet, and it intrigues me. My favorite colors are paint or splash, white, and cream. They are amazing little birds!
Hatchery quality silkies usually have small crests. Feed stores have this hatchery birds too.
Silkies with small to no crests (poofs) are typically not show/breeder quality, you want the large crests. S shape would be peep blessed and Sonoran silkies avatars as good examples! They are very "typey" Try Craigslist.com for silkies, you can sometimes find some great ones.
Awww! Thanks for thinking of me!

Even breeding two show winners together does not guarantee there won't be all kinds of faults or weaknesses that show up.
Sad, news. Teriyaki didn't make it. Poor girl. No poop in the tub or urates.
So terribly sad.

40 degrees and rain here. Yeah...I know... Big whoop. It's February in the Pacific North West. Same old, same old.

If I could catch a ferry to your door step, I'd love to have a cuppa and a chicken-y chat.

Day 20 for my batch in the bator. No Silkies in this set. Practicing to get it right with barn yard eggs. Two more weeks until I pick up eggs and birds at Catdance. Gives me a butterfly tummy just thinking about it!

Hope you get an awesome hatch!!

She went broody in Feb 2012 and September 2012, so quite far apart. She raised her last brood to 12 weeks before I moved her silkies to the silkie pen! By this time I had already sold 3 of her chicks She looks so tired lol She's all done being broody now. Hope she goes broody this spring again! Sorry Trav :( In my experience silkie chicks get impacted crop was quicker than other breeds when fed treats. I've lost 2 very young to impacted crop last year. :hugs
Love your photos.. And that you alow them to free range.. They are happier.. People are amazed that I can go right up to ours & pick them up... Our flock runs free in the front yard.. Only with supervision.. One time we had a bulk pick up.. Across the street, That is where the city of Tempe comes around to collect the bulk garbage. Trees, furniture & any debris that won't fit into the regular trash can.. So I'm on the front patio & I here one of our kids say "Loraine is across the street" I'm like what!! So, off I go to give her a spritz.. I keep a spray bottle close by to keep them off the patio & certain plants.. Little cutie thought ;) I could just see her little brain thinking. " whoo ya a large pile of greens" Off she went to dig. So now I pile up tree shavings for them..

I have a Lorraine too! She's a silkie! You must get her a man and name him Carl.

It's a must.

Great story!! :)

I meant not me personally, for my chickens haha! I guess since I'm close to the only one on here who bathes their chickens regularly it's confusing. It smells really strong so I thought it would be good for Icelynn my pullet but I don't know if eucalyptus is toxic

Edit: nvm I answered my own question. It is and it's actually a good pesticide for mites! Poulettes you should try it, no matter if it's mites or a skin issue it should help. But might I also suggest, douxo shampoo? It is a veterinary chlorhexidine shampoo that helps fight skin infections.

Chlorhexidine shampoos, washes and rinses are amazing! I use it on dogs cats horses and poultry. I highly recommend it. Some can be on the pricey side, but they are so worth it! The one I use is by Butler and is called Dermachlor K Flush. It's an antiseptic cleansing and drying solution that I have only been able to find at my friends specialty pet store. Otherwise, I think you have to purchase it from a vet.

I am so excited I just got the deal of the year. Brinsea had some of their demo models on their facebook page first come first serve. And I got an 20 Octagon Eco for only $109! My DH just gave me the go ahead to get another incubator the night before and I was getting ready to get another Mini Advance, but figured I'd put my name in for one of these, just in case. And I somehow got the last one! I feel so lucky! Now to find some Silkie eggs to fill it up when it gets here

Don't they usually have a hard crop when it is impacted. All Teriyaki had in hers was liquid and air bubbles. Something down farther was blocking things. She kept throwing up/drooling liquids she was drinking. She was about 10 weeks old, so she was young. Most of the ham pieces were small, but one was bigger. They were dong a good job breaking them up with the "chase me, I got something" game. She must have just gobbled one down. Like I said, sad, but they were young enough we haven't bonded so badly that it is terrible. They are after all, pets with a purpose around here. Still got 4 other great Silkies doing good.

My show hen's chick is 4months old now and looks like a pullet. I am trying to think of names that begin with i for this little lovie. My blues all start with i, aside from my rooster (Mr. Big). Isabel, Iris, Ingrid, and Irina. Can anyone help me out with some names? I would greatly appreciate it.
