Silkie thread!

Hello,

One of my silkies has been bald on top of her head for a few months. It started around the same time she went broody. I haven't seen the other hens picking at her, but I guess that could be happening. Or is it molting? I don't see signs of parasites like lice or mites.

Need help with Silkie medical issue. My friend's splash silkie is having trouble with her legs today. She's from the same clutch my silkie is from so she's 3 months old. Donna, my friend, says the silkie is displaying weak legs. Can walk but has to flutter her wings to do so. Eating. Bright eyed. Any ideas about what might be going on? Thank you in advance.
I also would be worried about Mareks but it could be some kind of injury. A search of Mareks will give you more info that you want.

I also had this puzzling issue. The mystery was solved when I got a hen pluck and eat a crest feather. Maybe they have more flavor. :D I had to separate that hen from the flock. Some wouldn't allow her to do it but others would. She lays huge eggs for a silkie and lays almost everyday. I determined that she needed extra protein in her diet. Fresh feathers have a little blood on the tip.

I use them.
I am just sick at heart to hear this! So very sorry!

There are several small predators that can get through a one inch circle. Rats, sm. weasels and mink are some. If their head can get through, their body can follow. They can also flatten to go through a long crack. I hope you are able to find the spot. I don't believe it was a mouse.

Thank you. I found a rat hole :(

My babies have hatched! 11 of them! My beautiful paint has wry neck though.

So happy to hear you have babies! So sad to hear you have a Paint with wry neck. Hope you can help it. My Catdance eggs have started to hatch day twenty! Four pipped and one is now out! I can't wait to share pictures too! So happy!

Thank you. I found a rat hole :(

It was in the floor, under a bag of shavings. BUT...The trail of feather look like she was dragged thru a hole chewed in wall about the size of (I first said bagel, but it's looks more like half a bagel). She was on the other side of the henhouse- so it couldn't have been a raccoon grabbing her with his hand. I dunno. They are sleeping in cages until we get the new coop built.

Are you saying that other hens plucked the feathers off her head?
We had a hen that looked like road kill when she molted. Literally. She looked horrendous!

And she would lose all her crest feathers too. This makes me think, maybe some of the other hens helped with the head feathers. lol Or the boys..

Hi All,
So, a friend of mine bought me these two Silkie babies. She didnt know what color they were supposed to be. Any guesses? They are very light, but have chipmunk stripping.
Thanks,
Kim
