Hello all. I got my first silkie almost a week ago. She was the only one that hatched. I couldn't leave her right? I was getting wheaten marans and she was the cutest. I never had such a tiny chick before. I'm hoping its a pullet, like most of us do. It's name is Itty Bitty. Here is a pic of my dog giving it a wash

A werid behavior showing in my little Catdance babies. If this sounds like something you have seen, please respond.
It started with the Paint chick. Chirping loudly in distress and pecking at itself in agitation. Mostly it's feet. Like fire ants were biting it. Jumping up and running around. Four hours later three more chicks are exhibiting this weird behavior. I think it looks like some kind of allergic reaction. They are otherwise eating and drinking and not acting sick. Just possessed with pecking their feet and wings. Weird.

Not to confuse you even further but mine has done this twice since hatch at 3 and 4 days old and it was one of the whites. It hasn't happened since. I use scratch and peck starter feed and some bobs redmill corn meal. They got elecrolites in their water the first couple days of life in the brooder but other then that I can't think of it being allergies. Can the way pin feathers grow in bug them ?? IDK they look uncomfortable to me haha. Sorry if this is no help.. Are they still doing this?

I put them out side in the chick house last night. I was thinking maybe they were getting too hot and crowded in the tub in the house. Now it's snowing!
It seems like a few more are acting agitated and pecking their feet and running around too. I watered down the FF chick starter to lessen the amount of Cayenne they were getting. Other than that, they seem to be thriving. Just weird behavior I hadn't seen before.
Well I went to check on her and i'm glad I did! I can't feel a definite egg anymore so not sure if it was just a bone I thought was or what, we'll know soon enough, but I DID fine that her cloaca was SUTURED SHUT(just opened enough for poop to go through)! SO glad I went in and woke her up to check on her! So I removed the sutures myself fairly easily. I knew he said he sutured her up so she didn't prolapse but he didn't make a suture removal appointment and I thought he was talking about the oviduct. Plus the sutures are the same color as her skin so I couldn't see them.

So thinking the 3 mo old silkie I posted a few days ago is most likely a roo, I went out and bought 6 little 4 week old buff silkie chicks and a bonus frizzle black chick. I'm hoping 1 will be a hen.
One I started to call Satan because it pecks your fingers. Well I noticed on it and it only a comb. NOT a walnut comb, tho they all have small bumps on thier beaks, but a normal chicken comb... I know they are silkies as thier starter feathers are like silkies and some are getting tuffs on thier heads. But Satan...is giving me a HMMMMM moment. What do you think.

It is weird behavior! I'm glad.. and not glad our chicks both showed the same behavior to rule out what may be the cause.. You described it perfectly though, Red ants! If mine do it again I'll let you know. I haven't noticed it again since last weekend. Mine are brooded in the house. I check on them .. well too much haha. I hear what goes down in the brooder at all times. They seem to thrive and be comfortable. Cutie patooties!
Hello all! This is the first time I have posted here, but I am mother to 3 black silkie babies, 2 self blue, 2 blue, and 2 paint. I am so proud they are all varying ages between 4 weeks and 2 weeks. I raised the blues and blacks from day old chicks, the paints I just got yesterday. One I think is frizzled. They, along with 3 blue sizzles and one mottled sizzle were an anniversary present from my husband. He = the best. Id like to here some opinions on the paint peeps. I need to take pictures of the others too and get some feedback. Ive noticed that my black silkies have some very different formations of facial hair already. I need that diagnosed...but that is for another post...on to the paints. The regular silkie paint is Spot, the frizzled paint is Rorshac. Hope for one roo one hen of course.
These were all taken right after I got them. They are getting along great with the other silkies of similar age and are a delight to have! What sweet little birds!
